Budget iPhone said to be iPhone 5 refresh, arriving with new handset September 18

September 18 might be the day that Apple breaks out the future iPhone – and two handsets are said to be arriving at the same time.

We're now hearing that Apple will release its budget iPhone in a range of colours, which is being referred to as a "refreshed" iPhone 5 rather than a new standalone product range.

It won't be alone, however, as CurrentEditorials reports that the cheaper handset will be released with the next generation iPhone, said to look just about identical to the iPhone 5.

iPhone 5S AND 5C?

As for the arrival date, the site suggests that September 18 will be the big unveiling, while September 27 is being touted as the day the phone hits the market - at least in the US.

According to the same sources, the budget iPhone will arrive with a price tag of $349 (about £227/AU$376) for the 16GB unlocked model, while a two year contract will cost $99 (about £65/AU$106).

While we do expect a new iPhone to land this autumn, CurrentEditorials isn't a site we're hugely familiar with and it's been impossible for us to verify its sources - as ever, the whole thing could be a cunning ruse for web traffic so don't put too much faith in September 18 for now.

Meanwhile, another (yes, another!) budget iPhone picture has leaked. This one is a little more interesting as the handset is stamped with FCC (Federal Communications Commission) markings, suggesting it's just about ready to hit the market.

But of course, it could be just another elaborate mock up, so as with all of this, please ensure you've got your skeptical hats firmly on your head.

Speaking of which, we just saw a box of some boxes claiming to belong to a possible iPhone 5C. Could this be the budget handset? And if so, what's with the name? iPhone Colour? iPhone Cheap and Cheerful? iPhone Clearly a fake mock up?

Has Apple made a case for the 'iPhone 5C'?

Has Apple made a case for the 'iPhone 5C'?

While not quite attracting the same level of interest as new Royal Baby's kingly monicker, tech fans remain pretty keen to learn the title Apple will bestow upon its somewhat less regal 'budget iPhone handset.'

Following umpteen leaks of cases, colours, specs and more, there's surprisingly been very little talk about what the device itself will actually be called. Until now.

A post on the WeiPhone forums, responsible for showcasing many of the leaks so far, shows a photo of purported packaging for the handset, bearing the branding iPhone 5C.

As you can see yourselves from the picture above, there's nothing particularly official-looking about the snap, but the plastic casing does resemble those harbouring recent iPod touches.

iPhone 5 Colour?

It wouldn't be too far-fetched to believe Apple may adopt such a naming convention. After all, the company is expected to launch the iPhone 5S later this year.

While this 'leak' can be placed firmly in the 'rumour and speculation' category, it's interesting to ponder what the 'C' in iPhone 5C could actually represent.

Could it be colour, cheap, cool, charming, Charlie, cost-less? Probably none of those, huh? Let us know your own thoughts in the comments below.

T-Mobile douses down payments for the summer, but shifts cost elsewhere

T-Mobile douses down payments for the summer, but shifts cost elsewhere

Short of giving away free devices or service, a new T-Mobile summer promotion has just removed one more barrier to jumping ship from your current carrier.

The Un-carrier today announced a limited-time summer promotion that will deliver devices, from phones to hotspots to tablets, to customers for no money down, even if they're taking advantage of Jump.

Starting tomorrow, most T-Mobile devices will be available for a down payment of $0, plus interest-free 24 equal monthly payments with approved credit.

The deal includes three of the latest flagship handsets, including the Samsung Galaxy S4 or HTC One for $25 per month, or the 16GB iPhone 5 for $27 monthly - however, the online-only 32GB and 64GB models are exempt from this offer.

Saved by zero

Of course there's no such thing as a free phone, so the nixed down payment shows up as an increase to monthly handset payments. Most phones picked up with no down payment end up saving you money, but the amount vary.

For example, the S4 normally has a $149.99 down payment and $20 monthly payments for 24 months, so the phone costs $629.99. The zero-down route gives you the phone for $25 a month for 24 months, or a total of $600.

With the iPhone 5, the $145.99 down payment and $21/month for 24 month installments total up to $649.99. The no down deal gets you the phone for $648.

T-Mobile's Simple Choice plan will probably make up for that, starting at $50 per month for unlimited talk, text and 500MB of data, but be warned that while you owe nothing at the outset, you'll see the cost elsewhere.

Despite this, T-Mo is confident in the promotion.

"The number of reasons not to switch to T-Mobile this summer is ZERO," proclaimed T-Mobile President and Chief Executive Officer John Legere in a press release.

You'll need to be a "well-qualified customer" in order to get 0 percent financing on top of no money down, and the balance of the device payments will come due if wireless service is cancelled during the 24 months.

T-Mobile isn't saying when the summer promotion will end, but the deal is open to both new and existing personal or small business customers on all devices.

3CX updates MDM to extend Android control

IP telephony firm 3CX has updated its cloud-based Mobile Device Manager (MDM) service to give small and midsized businesses (SMBs) greater control over corporate email on Android devices.

The company has equipped Version 6.3 of its MDM with AquaMail, a commercial Android email client that allows administrators to remotely push configurations to users' devices, store and delete attachments and emails (including wiping accounts if an employee leaves), and view logs.

The update also includes integration with 3CX's DroidDesktop Android app, which IT teams can use to free a smartphone's space remotely by dragging files from a desktop window that displays its interface.

Other features

MDM's existing features include mobile device management with the ability to deploy, remotely review and install apps, and monitor malware. It also allows adminstrators to remotely wipe mobile devices by sending an SMS in the absence of an internet connection.

Companies can try a fully-featured version of 3XC's Mobile Device Manager service with a free account that supports up to five devices by signing up here.
