iPhone 5S photo avalanche shows off Apple's champagne jacket

iPhone 5S photo avalanche shows off Apple's champagne jacket

Feast your eyes on this gallery of photos of the iPhone 5S casing in the colour that all the kids are calling "Champagne".

It's really awfully nice of the internet to go with champagne instead of cava, say, or that other yellow-ish-gold-ish substance, urine.

Anyway, these pictures come from relatively new tipster on the block Sonny Dickson who claims to have nabbed the extensively photographed rear-housing from a source in Apple's Asian supply chain.

Throwing a Veuve ball

There's not much more to say beyond "here are the pictures", so here are the pictures:

iPhone 5S

We're expecting to see the iPhone 5S launch date land at some point in September - September 10 looks like a good bet if you're the gambling type.

  • In the meantime, here's everything we know about the iPhone 5S so far - and the lesser-spotted cheapo iPhone 5C which may launch at the same time.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Kids attempts to lure money from parents
Aug 27th 2013, 13:13, by John McCann

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Kids attempts to lure money from parents

Kids these days, what are they like? According to Samsung they're looking to get their grubby little mitts on your latest tech purchase, but thankfully the Galaxy Tab 3 Kids is here to distract them from your new gadget.

Coming in a lurid yellow hue the Galaxy Tab 3 Kids has exactly the same specs as, yep you've guessed it, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3.

That means it sports a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB internal storage, 7-inch 1024 x 600 display, 3MP rear camera, 1.3MP front camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a micro SD slot.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is running the show, but as this is the "Kids" version it has been heavily modified with a child-friendly interface, pre-loaded content such as games, entertainment and ebooks as well as a dedicated app store for your little treasures.

Kids only?

There's a parent control system where passwords can be set up and a time management tool means that little Jimmy will only be able to play on his Tab 3 Kids for 30 minutes before it locks him out.

It's not clear if the child-friendly interface can be switched off to allow parents to use the tablet themselves and the spec sheet suggests the Tab 3 Kids does come with the likes of Gmail, Google Maps and the Play Store installed - things some parents won't want their kids using.

So aside from the average specs and an interface which doesn't - at first glance - lend itself to adult use, surely Samsung has done some work on the chassis to make it "child-proof", right? Wrong!

Money please

That lovely chunky rubber border you see hugging the slate in the photo above is actually a case which you can pick up, wait for it, at an extra cost to you.

And if you haven't finished parting with your cash there's also an "easy-to-grip C Pen" which, between you and me, is a chunky stylus. Once again, a paid-for optional extra.

There's no word on a Galaxy Tab 3 Kids price just yet, but considering it's basically the stock Galaxy Tab 3 with a different software overlay we're not overly hopeful of a pocket-money-friendly price.

The tablet will go on sale in Korea early next month, followed closely by China, Europe, the US, Africa, South America and South East Asia.

It looks like it will be coming to the UK, but Samsung has told us, "UK availability will be announced in due course."

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 to shoot in 4K?
Aug 27th 2013, 11:30, by Kate Solomon

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 to shoot in 4K?

With IFA 2013 approaching, rumours surrounding the upcoming Galaxy Note 3 are flying thick and fast and the latest suggests its camera will be capable of recording Ultra HD video.

An "industry official" told of the camera boost, claiming that the phone-cum-tablet will be capable of recording in 200 million pixel resolution.

The thinking is that being able to shoot home movies in 4K will encourage Note 3 owners to upgrade to an Ultra HD ready Samsung TV too.

Ultra unlikely

We're not convinced that the new class of smartphones about to be unleashed in Berlin will come toting 4K snappers simply because phone memories are not up to the task yet.

Video content of that quality will see your phone overburdened before you can say sharper-than-sharp picture quality.

But it's not the first word we've heard of a handset coming with UHD smarts: the oft-touted Sony Xperia Z1 (previously known as Honami and also potentially billed as the Xi) is said to boast a 20MP camera with video shooting resolution of 4000 x 2000.

Samsung is also said to be giving audio quality a bit of a boost on the Note 3, according to the leak, with 24-bit playback smarts coming aboard.

Given that the source of the Note 3 rumours is the dodgily Google Translated word of an "industry official", we're not exactly staking our lives on the device coming with a 4K snapper.

However, we should find out for sure next week - a Samsung official today confirmed that the Note 3 will be unveiled on September 4 alongside the Galaxy Gear smartwatch.

Samsung Galaxy Gear will arrive Sept 4 but its flexible display is MIA
Aug 27th 2013, 11:27, by Hugh Langley

Samsung Galaxy Gear will arrive Sept 4 but its flexible display is MIA

Samsung has confirmed that it will release its Galaxy Gear smartwatch alongside the Galaxy Note 3 at its September 4 "unpacked" event at IFA 2013.

The Korea Times interviewed Lee Young-hee, executive vice president of Samsung's mobile business, who admitted that the Gear was definitely no myth in name or concept.

"We will be introducing a new wearable concept device called Galaxy Gear at our own event in Berlin on September 4," she said, also reconfirming that we'll see the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 arrive at the same time.

4th Gear

The less great news is that she then went on to dash hopes of the watch having a flexible screen - something that earlier rumours had whispered about.

"The Gear won't have a flexible display," she said, but added that Samsung has "intellectual properties for patents related to the next wearable devices. Those are concepts for future products."

Young-hee also reinforced that the Gear will be very much a paired device for our smartphones.

"The new device will enhance and enrich the current smart mobile experience in many ways," she said. "It will lead a new trend in smart mobile communications."

Bold words, but we don't doubt that Samsung will have a big impact on the smartwatch market. And unless Apple has some super-secret iWatch unveiling planned for the next few days – which it almost certainly does not - it's set to pip Cupertino to the post.

Sony teases Xperia Z1 design, microSD port and water-resistance

Sony teases Xperia Z1 design, microSD port and water-resistance

Sony is continuing to add fuel to the fire for its next flagship smartphone, which currently goes by three monikers - the Honami, Xperia i1 and Xperia Z1 - with a new video showing off its slender frame.

Posted on the official Sony Xperia YouTube channel we can be sure this clip is legit, and it reveals a slender smartphone with features similar to that of the Xperia Z.

Down the right hand side there's the large, centralised power/lock key with the volume rocker switch and dedicated camera key below it.

Flaps galore!

There appears to be an access flap above the power key and we'd expect it to hide the slot for the microSIM. It also looks easier to access that the coverings on the Xperia Z which infuriated us after a while.

There's another covered port on the opposite side of the Xperia Z1 and it's clearly labelled "microSD" in the video, so good news for any expandable storage fans out there.

Sony Xperia Z1 - LEAK

News on whether the Honami would keep the water-resistant credentials of its predecessor were thin on the ground, but Sony has cleared up any confusion in the video with the device clearly being dropped into water. Nice.

We also get a glimpse of the camera lens on the back of the Xperia i1, with what looks like a single LED flash below and the "G" logo to the its right signalling the phone will sport Sony's G Lens - which is rumoured to be a whopping 20.7MP offering.

Sony Xperia Z1 - LEAK

From what we've seen in the video it would appear images on ETrade Supply claiming to show the metal frame of the Xperia Z1 are pretty much on the money with the various buttons and port coverings all appearing in the correct places.

The report also confirms the ports and keys are water tight, but it's worth noting that the headphone port on top appears to be uncovered - a welcome step up from the annoying covered version on the Xperia Z.

Apple to let you trade-in your old iPhone for cheaper iPhone 5S?
Aug 27th 2013, 10:20, by John McCann

Apple to let you trade-in your old iPhone for cheaper iPhone 5S?

It looks like Apple is about to jump on the trade-in bandwagon in its dedicated stores, with reports suggesting a program will be in place in time for the new iPhone launch next month.

Apple is apparently in final preparations to launch its iPhone trade-in program next month, or so say "sources with knowledge of the intuitive" over on 9to5Mac.

The program would allow owners of older versions of Apple's handsets - the iPhone 4 or 4S for example - to bring them into an Apple store and swap them for a shiny new iPhone at a discounted price.

Nothing new

While this concept has been around for years at various retailers, this is the first time Apple Stores would offer the deal.

It seems that Apple is keen for as many people to buy the new iPhone direct from its stores rather than going via a network or high street retailer.

Apparently 80% of all iPhones sold are outside the Cupertino firm's stores, so there's clear money to be made with this new scheme likely to aid home-grown sales.

We expect Apple to launch the iPhone 5S and possibly the cheaper iPhone 5C next month with September 10 being touted for the 5S launch date, where we may see official confirmation of the trade-in program too.

Incoming! Samsung teases BBM for Android launch

Incoming! Samsung teases BBM for Android launch

We already know that BlackBerry's prized instant messaging service will be winging its way to iOS and Android, and Samsung may be looking to generate hype around BBM's arrival on its handsets.

The video, supposedly posted by Samsung Ghana, gives little away but it does appear to confirm BBM will be available on not only on the firm's smartphones but also on its tablets.

Taking a look at the video the quality is relatively low and there doesn't seem to be any sound, so we're not 100% convinced this is a genuine Samsung production.

We're still waiting for a firm BBM for Android release date though, and Samsung's teaser just says "coming soon to Galaxy smartphones".

When does summer end?

BlackBerry has confirmed BBM will be arriving on Android and iOS by the end of summer, but it's not overly clear when that is.

Questions have been raised about the Canadian firm's decision to launch BBM on rival platforms, as the messaging service is one of the big unique selling points of its new range of BlackBerry 10 devices - currently consisting of the Z10, Q10 and Q5.

There's also a big question mark over why Samsung would want to promote a rival to its ChatON service, which it's touting as cross-platform and an easy way to talk to buddies.

We've contacted BlackBerry to find out more details on the launch and we'll update this article once we hear more.

iOS 7 September 10 release adds more evidence to iPhone 5S and 5C launch
Aug 27th 2013, 09:10, by Hugh Langley

iOS 7 September 10 release adds more evidence to iPhone 5S and 5C launch

September 10 is the date we're currently marking in the diaries for the iPhone 5S and 5C reveal, and that may have just been reinforced by a claim that we'll see the release of iOS 7 that very same day.

According to an email sent to developers from Nuance, the company behind Siri, the general availability date for iOS 7 is set for September 10.

Traditionally, new iOS versions have been made available the day of a new iPhone launch so Nuance's bean-spilling is no huge shock to the system. But on the flip side, this seems to be more evidence that September 10 is going to be Apple's big day.

This also means we should actually have something to play with on the day, as we don't expect the new iPhones to be available until at least a week later.

iSpy an iOS release date

Of course, the beta version of iOS 7 has been available to developers since its WWDC 2013 unveiling in June and has been incrementally updated by Apple since.

But September 10 is looking like the date that we'll finally get Jony Ive's new OS overhaul in its final form, without any of the nagging bugs that owners of the developer version have been putting up with in the past few weeks.

The Gold Master version, usually set out to developers before the general release, is yet to be seen. But if September 10 is the golden date, we expect it to appear very soon.

Vodafone's Roam Like Home plan pricing finally announced
Aug 27th 2013, 00:49, by Farrha Khan

Vodafone's Roam Like Home plan pricing finally announced

Vodafone has today launched its Roam Like Home plans, called Vodafone Red, which upgrades the telco's old Infinite plans.

Available from tomorrow, all Vodafone Red 24-month plans include unlimited calls to standard national numbers and mobiles and unlimited SMS to local and international numbers.

The $65 a month plan includes 1.5GB of data, $80 a month will give you 2.5GB and $100 will give you 5GB of data, similar to current offerings, though the new $80 Red plan does get you 500MB more data.

Each plan includes $15 handset repayments, which means SIM-only plans offer the same inclusions, but at $50, $65 and $85 a month.

The new plans are part of Vodafone's push to recover the brand, with Vodafone Australia CEO Bill Morrow telling journalists last Thursday that the company is looking to simplify plans.

He explained that the new 4G network and new plans were only the first few steps, saying "we're only halfway through our program".

Vodafone Red plan details come just a week after Optus announced changes to its international roaming charges.

The new Red

Part of the recovery plan is Vodafone Cares, where Vodafone Red users will have priority access to Vodafone's onshore customer care centres.

But the biggest coup for the new plan is the Roam Like Home option, which as we reported earlier, will allow customers to use their mobile plan while travelling in the US, UK and New Zealand for $5 each day that they either call, message or use data.

"We are serious about doing something about the high cost of international roaming and have begun the journey with the US, UK and NZ, which is where 40% of our customers travel the most," Morrow said.

Of course, if you exceed your data usage, you will be charged at the usual roaming fees, but you can always add a Vodafone data pack – or use Wi-Fi.

The "infinite" nature of the plans means that you could call anywhere in the country you are visiting, or back home, with the price capping at $5.

Vodafone will be announcing more Roam Like Home countries by the end of this year, with plans to continue growing the list in the future.

Verizon Moto X up for grabs online Aug. 29, in stores 'in the coming weeks'

Verizon Moto X up for grabs online Aug. 29, in stores 'in the coming weeks'

Verizon is wasting no time getting its Moto X out to the public, or as little time as it can following AT&T's jump start.

The carrier tweeted this afternoon that it will start selling the Android 4.2 phone online starting Aug. 29, with it available in stores "in the coming weeks."

The phone will cost $199.99 on a two-year contract.

According to a Verizon representative's tweets, Moto Maker - the online tool that allows users to customize their Moto X - is still on tap for "later this year," with no other specifics offered.

From A to V

Big Red is the second carrier to chalk up a Moto X release, with AT&T already selling the phone as of Aug. 23.

According to the same rep, Verizon will carry the 16GB model. It will come in black or white, but again, customers should be able to add personal touches before year's end.

The same day AT&T started slinging the Motorola-made handset, a company VP posted on Google+ that it would be a matter of days before other carriers would start their rollouts.

We're still waiting on Sprint, T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular to out their X news, so tune in for more if you're a customer on these networks. News should arrive post haste.

Updated: Xperia Honami Mini materializes as Sony teases its bigger brother
Aug 26th 2013, 19:18, by Lily Prasuethsut

Updated: Xperia Honami Mini materializes as Sony teases its bigger brother

There's been a bunch of Mini phones on the market lately (HTC One Mini, Motorola Droid Mini and Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini anyone?) plus rumors of Sony making its own Mini to join the fray.

The supposed Sony Xperia Honami Mini has shown up in another leak, this time in a blurry comparison shot next to a BlackBerry device.

The source claimed the Honami Mini is packing a Snapdragon 800, the same processor that might be in the new Sony Xperia i1 (or Honami or Z1). This may be a bit of a stretch since the Mini is rumored to have a 4.3-inch 720p display.

However, the leak also said the Mini will come with 2GB of RAM and a 20.7MP camera sensor with 1/2.3 F 2.0 Sony G lens. Inside you'll find 16GB of storage space and a battery sitting at 2400 mAh, which matches earlier leaked reports.

Sony's teasing us again, too

The Honami Mini isn't the only thing tantalizing Sony Xperia fans.

Just like last week's social media tease, Sony took to Twitter and Facebook again to post another #bestofsony glimpse of its expected flagship, the many monikered Sony Xperia i1.

Xperia tease

And instead of the minimal power button Sony has shown us a bit of the camera (or more specifically, a G lens) - a feature from Sony's line of lenses for DSLRs and digicams.

This confirms earlier reports of the lens which means rumors of a 20.65MP camera with a resolution of 3936 x 5248 on the Xperia i1 may prove to be true.

We'll find out soon what the camera can do if Sony actually showcases the new Xperia device at a possible IFA reveal on Sept. 4.

Update: Hold onto your hats, because this Honami train just keeps on rolling.

Xperia Z1

A series of illicit images supposedly from a hands on session with the Honami (the larger version, not the Mini) made it online today. The original pics appear to have been sent to 404 limbo, but we have a few courtesy of Digi-Wo (via SlashGear).

There's not a ton to glean from the snaps, though the device looks rather thick.

It appears to have plenty in common with the Xperia Z, though a user noted it's heavier than that device and its screen is more "white" as colors are less saturated. The effect is reportedly due to the phone's use of X-Reality tech versus Sony's Bravia Engine 2.

Samsung Galaxy S5 camera specs leak with tech shuttled from the Note III
Aug 26th 2013, 18:57, by Michael Rougeau

Samsung Galaxy S5 camera specs leak with tech shuttled from the Note III

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is just a few months old, but the rumor mill has already begun working on its successor, the Galaxy S5.

The latest report claimed that the Galaxy S5 will sport a brand new 16-megapixel camera, an upgrade from the S4's 13-megapixel sensor (and matching the Galaxy S4 Zoom's 16 megapixels).

The South Korean site Electronic Times News said today that the phone's camera module is currently in development and features optical image stabilization (OIS) like the LG G2.

The camera will be ready for the Galaxy S5's launch next March, the site reported.

Supply chain blues

That OIS tech was reportedly originally meant for the Galaxy Note 3 (which is pretty much confirmed for September), but supply chain issues kept Samsung from implementing it in time.

Availability of the auto focus actuator in which the stabilization tech is integrated will improve early next year, said Electronic Times News, making it the perfect time for Samsung to adopt it en masse.

Samsung will reportedly finish development on its 2014 flagship's camera by the end of this year, and just in time.

There's not much else floating around in regards to the S5 just yet, though we did catch a possible glimpse of it last month.

Grey iPhone 5S gets bang 'em up backing in new shots

Grey iPhone 5S gets bang 'em up backing in new shots

Following insight into its innards, we have further evidence that gold isn't the only new color Apple will introduce with the iPhone 5S.

Courtesy of Apple tracker Sonny Dickson, a host of images purporting to show a grey or graphite next-gen iPhone are now sparkling before our eyes.

As has become his fashion, Dickson posted a Thanksgiving-sized serving of grey iPhone 5S snaps. The phone is clearly lighter than the black we're used to from Cupertino's iDevices. The phone's backside features a black trim surrounding the new color.

We asked Dickson for confirmation on the authenticity of these images, and he assured us that the source of the images "is 100% real." Of course, we remain skeptical until we have full confirmation from Apple, but below you can see what Dickson claimed is the gold iPhone 5S and grey iPhone 5S next to the 5S' screen assembly:

Gold, grey and black iPhone

The iPhone 5S picture sharpens

Dickson's photos come after a report we brought you yesterday that showed a "gunmetal" grey SIM card tray supposedly belonging to an iPhone 5S. Interestingly, all of the grey iPhone 5S' in Dickson's images appear to be missing their SIM trays.

Apple is generally believed to be planning a Sept. 10 event to introduce the iPhone 5S and quite possible the iPhone 5C, a "cheaper" version of the iPhone.

On Sunday, Fox News anchor Clayton Morris tweeted twice with info on the iPhone 5S. According to Morris' sources, the phone's A7 chipset will be 31% faster than the silicon inside the iPhone 5.

Branching out from there, Morris followed up with word that the phone will have a dedicated motion tracking chipset, which "should be an interesting camera upgrade," he noted.

  • For all the latest on the iPhone 5S, head this way. If you're already interested in the iPhone 6, we've got the 411 for you, too.

30 best apps for college - best document apps

University life is all about finding a balance between having fun and studying because whether you're a freshman or a senior, it's tough to stay focused with so much going on around you.

22. Viber

Price: Free

Available on: iOS, Android

Traveling abroad is a big part of college and Viber is a great way to keep in touch with home (or your new long distance friends when you're back on campus). Completely free, use Viber to call, text and send photo/video messages worldwide over Wi-Fi or 3G. If you're saving money by using Wi-Fi, the app can cut in and out so be wary of spotty connections. But it's free, so we can't really complain.

24. Last Call

Speaking of drinking responsibly, Last Call is a blood alcohol calculator app that helps you figure out how much you've had to drink, and acts as a little alcohol log throughout the night. It's also able to call you a cab back to the dorms if you've gone a bit over which is a handy feature to have. Android's AlcoDroid app is a nice equivalent for non-iOS users.

25. Groupon

Available on: iOS, Android

Dorm life means skimping on meals and eating at the cafeteria as much as possible. However there will be times when hanging out requires a little more finesse and that's where Groupon comes in. The popular deals site as an app makes saving easy if away from a printer and computer=. Since every deal is immediately ready to use, you can snatch it up, head to the location and use the voucher right from your mobile device as easy as 1-2-3 (which is also useful with large groups of indecisive college friends).
