128GB iPhone may continue the the 'every two years' rule

128GB iPhone may continue the the 'every two years' rule

The iPhone 5S is expected to keep the same dimensions as the iPhone 5, but there's a slim chance that Apple may supersize its smartphone line with a 128GB option.

A German retail chain, Media Markt, has put a placeholder for a 128GB version of the iPhone 5 into its inventory system, according to German Apple blog Macerkopf.

The screenshot of the database listing doesn't include a model number. Instead the inventory description contains a generic xxxxxxxxx.

The mystery 128GB iPhone 5 mention could also be intended for the forthcoming iPhone 5S, speculates Media Markt. That would make more sense.

iPhone 128GB listing

The 'every two years rule'

Apple has stuck to a pattern of doubling the iPhone storage capacity every two years.

Currently, the iPhone 5 is available in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB. The same storage sizes were available for theiPhone 4S.

When the company introduced the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS, the smartphones topped out at 32GB.

The iPhone 3G and the original iPhone hit a memory ceiling at 16GB if you go all the way back to the beginning.

Continuing with this pattern, that would mean the iPhone 5S and iPhone 6 would have a maximum capacity of 128GB.

That may not happen right away, as Apple waited until earlier this year to expand the iPad 4 line with a 128GB version. It could happen mid-cycle.

We're likely to get our first chance at finding out whether or not Apple stays true to history and introduces a 128GB iPhone 5S on September 10.

Updated: HTC One Verizon release date, news and features

Well, the information has arrived. The HTC One is coming to Verizon on Aug. 22, priced at $199.99 with a two-year contract.

Verizon tweeted the news on Aug. 16, letting Big Red customers know the flagship will be available then online and in stores. The One will have access to Verizon's industry-leading 4G LTE coverage, the tweet reminded us.

There's no word of a color variant coming, and with Sprint nabbing an exclusive red color we're left to wonder if Verizon will ever move beyond the silver sheen.

The phone will come with 32GB of internal storage and run a more up to date version of Jelly Bean than we've seen on other Ones, Android 4.2.2.

HTC One Verizon

Below you'll all the latest details on the HTC One Verizon.

Verizon customers, mix some Bloody Marys, buy some red streamers and party hats. You've got reason to celebrate because the HTC One is finally coming to Big Red.

Why are we so excited for you? Only because the HTC One currently sits atop our best smartphone list, and now it'll finally be available on one of North America's largest carriers.

HTC One Verizon: release date

The HTC One Verizon will go on sale and in stores Aug. 22. Verizon changed its tune from a tweet that told us "this summer" to a specific date. Thanks, Big Red.

The HTC One originally hit Sprint, AT&T and T-Mobile in March. That makes Verizon just a few months late. Hey, better late than never: Big Red never even stocked the awesome HTC One X and its successor the One X+, instead opting for its own variant, the quite good Droid DNA.

HTC One Verizon: price

Currently, the 32GB HTC One sells for $199 with two-year contract, and $599 month-to-month. The 64GB version is $299, and $650 off-contract.

Verizon will sell the 32GB One for $199.99 with a two-year agreement. No word yet on the 64GB version.

HTC One Verizon: storage

Just 32GB, or 64GB as well? That is the question. Currently, only AT&T has an exclusive on the 64GB version, and for now Verizon is letting Mah Bell stick with its monopoly as it will only carry a 32GB version of the phone.

HTC One Verizon

Obviously, since we're not in Asia, microSD storage is out of the question. Only the lucky folks in Japan and China get that version, and here's why. Hint: it's due to space inside the device.

A Verizon spokesperson further confirmed Aug. 19 we received release information that Verizon's HTC One will be sans microSD.

HTC One Verizon: colors

Right now, the HTC One is available in black or silver from Sprint and AT&T. T-Mobile just has the silver version. That begs the question, what colors will Verizon stock?

HTC One Verizon

Silver is the only version we're seeing for now, though we're still waiting on word for a black variant and whether that elusive blue shade will ever make an appearance.

HTC One Verizon: Android version

The HTC One is a Jelly Bean device, but it launched with 4.2.1, not the updated 4.2.2.

Verizon, that lucky dog, will see its One launch with Android 4.2.2, besting its competitors on at least one front.

HTC One Verizon

HTC One Verizon: stock Android 'Nexus Edition'

Google took the phone community by surprise when it announced a "Nexus-ized" version of the Galaxy S4. That left us wondering if we'd see a stock Android version of the other favorite Android phone, the HTC One.

There was some flip-flopping; first HTC said no, then they said yes, there would be a Sense-less version of its new flagship phone. However, this stock Android device is GSM only, meaning it will only work on AT&T and T-Mobile.

Update: According to Popherald.com, the HTC One Google Edition launches June 26th and will be available for AT&T and T-Mobile for $599.99.

HTC One Verizon

So now we'd love to know if there will be a CDMA of this Googled-up phone. That would open it up not only to Verizon, but to Sprint, U.S. Cellular and MetroPCS, as well.

Update: We could thank the government for at least one thing in the month of July as an FCC filing for the HTC One on Verizon surfaced and was scanned over by Engadget. The device tested by the agency held model number PN07310 and came packing LTE (band 13), GSM (850/1900) and CDMA (850/1900), all frequencies welcome on Verizon.

We also see support for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC, though none of that is too surprising. With the listing, we can only hope that an actual release is not too far behind.

HTC One Verizon: carrier branding

Every carrier loves to put its logo and some bloatware on your phone, and Verizon is no exception. The carrier has left its mark loud and proud on the One, placing its logo and its stylized "4G LTE" stamp on the back.

Photos show Apple may just give iPhone 5S the Midas touch

Photos show Apple may just give iPhone 5S the Midas touch

Apple's had more trouble stopping leaks about the iPhone 5S than a sieve has stopping water, but we're certainly not complaining.

How else would we have learned about supposed fingerprint technology, dual-flash camera or the expected launch event for Apple's next iteration of the popular smartphone?

Amid the reports of the iPhone 5S' hardware and specs, there have also been some rumors about the Cupertino company adding a bit of bling to the line.

Though the rumored budget iPhone 5C has been tied to a few different hue variations, we haven't seen much in the way of actual evidence the same was true of the iPhone 5S... until today.

Gold standard

French site MacBoutic uncovered some leaked production photos of a new iPhone 5S complete with a gold shell.

It's certainly tough to verify the validity of the gold case considering there are no logos or markings visible anywhere on the device. However, the fact that the entire piece is gold gives some credence to the idea this hasn't been developed by a third party.

iPhone 5S Gold leak

There were leaked images of colored iPhone 5S SIM trays earlier this year, which could also help hint this fabled device is one step closer to reality. Some gold colored buttons supposedly belonging to the next iPhone have also surfaced as of late.

Gold would certainly fit in with the recent switch to metallic cases Apple made with the iPhone 5, and even if gold isn't that bombastic a color, a third, more "luxurious" option could be very appealing to the iFaithful.

In the land of exclusive carrier deals though, one has to wonder if this rumored gold iPhone 5S will be available everywhere.

Moto X Skip might make passwords a thing of the past

Moto X Skip might make passwords a thing of the past

Who needs fingerprint scanners? Motorola's new Skip accessory might be the user authentication of the future.

Motorola is taking action in the war against passwords, and with the Moto X's Skip you'll be able to authenticate without entering a passcode or placing your thumb against the glass like you're being arrested.

The wearable doodad lets users bypass the Moto X's lock screen, and for a limited time Motorola will give it away to those who buy the phone through the online Moto Maker.

Skip also comes with three "Skip dots," stickers that can be placed in the car or at home and unlock the Moto X with a tap.

The future of authentication

AllThingsD helped to break the news of Motorola's Skip today and mentioned that the company could have even bigger authentication plans in the works.

At the site's D11 conference earlier this year, Regina Dugan, Motorola's head of advanced projects, discussed a future where users authenticate with their mobiles using swallowed pills and even tattoos. How's that for phone commitment?

But for now the Motorola Skip and Skip dots are only announced for the Moto X, releasing soon on most major carriers - including an AT&T release on Aug. 23. Motorola noted that Skip is the first step towards the futuristic "superpower-like" authentication methods it has cooking.

AT&T customers will have exclusive access for some time to Motorola's Moto Maker, which allows users to customize several aspects of the Moto X.

A Skip and three Skip dots will be made available for purchase when the Moto X launches via motorola.com, but there's no word yet on pricing.

Verizon HTC One coming Aug. 22, arrives more than fashionably late to the party

Verizon HTC One coming Aug. 22, arrives more than fashionably late to the party

Good work, Scooby Gang. The HTC One Verizon release date is solved.

OK, Verizon essentially handed us the answer in the form of a tweet, but don't take this away from us.

The nation's top dog carrier finally revealed today that HTC's flagship is hitting its online and retail stores Aug. 22 for $199.99 on a two-year contract.

Verizon joins AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint in carrying what we've crowned the best Android phone, making it ever so late to the HTC One party.

Carrier coverage is complete

Verizon reiterated repeatedly that it would carry the phone before summer's end, and earlier this week posted a sign-up page so customers could be alerted to its arrival.

Uniquely, the phone will launch with Android 4.2.2, as tweeted by a Verizon representative, whereas already-released versions run Android 4.1.2. Verizon's HTC One is of the 32GB flavor, the same rep tweeted. That of course could change down the road, but for now only AT&T owns the 64GB take.

Sprint scored an exclusive red variant of the phone yesterday, and while rumors circulated Verizon would get a blue version, that wasn't included in today's announcement.

So perhaps there's still a little mystery to be had, after all.

Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch can make calls too, report claims

Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch can make calls too, report claims

Samsung's rumored Galaxy Gear smartwatch will give users the ability to make phone calls, browse the web and answer emails, according to new whispers floating about.

Bloomberg sources, while backing up recent claims the device will arrive on Sept. 4 on the eve of IFA, also claimed the watch will be made available to the public next month.

The report doesn't clarify whether the device will be able to make phone calls individually through the presence of cellular tech, but if that's the case, the Gear would suddenly become much more significant.

Previously, expectations had been that the Galaxy Gear would be an accoutrement to the company's Galaxy smartphones, allowing calls to be answered and made, but via a Bluetooth connection to the handset.

No flexi-screen?

While the 'companion device' solution is probably still the more likely outcome, a watch that can exist independently and still make calls would harken back to the failed LG Watch Phone experiment of a few years back.

One thing the device won't possess, according to Bloomberg, is the Flexible OLED display tech Samsung has been diligently plotting for a number of years.

A launch on Sept. 4 at Samsung's Unpacked event in Berlin would surely steal the headlines at the IFA tech show, which commences a couple of days later.

Samsung is expected to use the event to show off its latest Galaxy Note 3 smartphone-cum-tablet, but getting a smartwatch to market before Apple's expected iWatch would surely be the big news.

TechRadar will be out in force in Berlin next month, so stay turned for the announcements as the news rolls in.

AT&T gets first dibs on Moto X and Moto Maker starting Aug. 23

AT&T gets first dibs on Moto X and Moto Maker starting Aug. 23

You can almost hear the high-fives of AT&T executives shouting "First!" from their Dallas headquarters with the announcement that Motorola's latest handset will finally go on sale next Friday.

Exactly as rumored only just last week, AT&T announced today that Motorola's highly anticipated Moto X will arrive online and in stores next Friday, Aug. 23. It's then that those who purchase their Moto X online will be able to customize the handset using Moto Maker.

Touted as "the first smartphone designed by you" with assembly right here in the U.S. of A., the Moto X debuts exclusively - for the time being - on AT&T's network, priced at $199.99 (16GB) or $249.99 (32GB).

AT&T Next customers can nab the Moto X for as little as $27 per month (16GB, or 32GB for $32 per month). AT&T plans to stock black and white versions of the phone in its retail locations, with color samples available for people planning to customize.

Makin' Moto

Using the Moto Maker, Moto X buyers can make the handset their own with 18 different front and back color choices, including accent colors for the power key, volume key and camera ring.

Moto Maker also allows users to add their name or a short message to the back of the device, preselect a custom power-on message and choose from a number of Motorola-only wallpapers, then have the device shipped to your door in four days tops.

A few lucky Moto X buyers who signed up previously for more information from AT&T's website will be able to order their handset starting Monday, Aug. 19 instead.

Last but not least, all Moto X orders made via Moto Maker will ship with a free, wearable Skip accessory, a small dongle that allows users to bypass the phone's lock screen whenever it's in close proximity to the device. The Skip offer is good for a limited time.

Updated: 10 best iPhone football apps for 2013/14

As legendary Liverpool manager Bill Shankly once said: "some people believe football is a matter of life and death - it is much, much more important than that."

That sentiment will ring true for any football fan, from those who stand on freezing terraces on Tuesday nights to those glued to the television every Saturday afternoon.

We've rounded up our top ten football apps for iPhone, which will help you enjoy football even more.

Whether it's following your team, enjoying the finest goals from around the world or passing those hollow days between games, these are the best football apps for your iPhone.

1. Sky Sports Live Football Score Centre - free

Sky Sports Score Centre

Every Saturday, millions of people around the UK spend their afternoon feverishly staring at their TV, watching four grey-haired men from Sky Sports watch football.

US readers may find this a bizarre phenomenon, but if your team is in action, it's essential viewing.

Unfortunately, Saturday afternoons often have other dubious functions such as family, shopping and kids. If this sounds familiar, try Sky Sports Score Centre, which puts Jeff Stelling and his silver-haired gang in your pocket, with up-to-the-minute action from every game from the Premier League and Serie A to the Evo-Stick League, with team line-ups, live commentary and stats.

Download it from iTunes

2. Sun+ Goals - free (needs subscription)

Sun+ Goals - needs a subscription

The ESPN goals app proved particularly popular last season, not least because it allowed speedy access to clips of goals at no cost.

Thos clip rights were snapped up by The SUn and The Times this year, and to check out the critical moments of Premier League games you will need a subscription to climb over the newspaper paywall.

It's an interesting additional content idea, and it will be fascinating to see if it soars like a young Alan Shearer, or tanks like Stan Collymore's career in Spain.

Download it from iTunes

3. FourFourTwo Stats Zone - free

FourFourTwo Stats Zone

If you take your football more seriously than those halfwits in the pub who spout half-baked observations based on tired cliches, FourFourTwo Stats Zone is the app for you.

It offers full analysis of all the Premier League games, from the basic shot count and possession to full pass maps and work rates of the players.

It's not just a pool of meaningless information for football geeks, as it can also be used for evil, adding insight to your fantasy football teams, weekend sports betting and pub trivia.

Download it from iTunes

4. Football Manager Handheld 2013 - £6.99

Football Manager Handheld 2013

A game for true football fans, Football Manager Handheld 2013 is a portable port of the classic PC game, which has sapped millions of collective hours from our youth.

It's made with footy-mad commuters in mind, and while it's lighter on the options, it retains all the compulsive enjoyment of its fully-featured predecessors.

The best thing about it isn't the breadth of teams or smooth learning curve, both of which are excellent, but that it can be picked up and put down easily, making it ideal for short journeys to work.

Download it from iTunes

5. New Star Soccer - 69p

New Star Soccer

The game that took the world by storm last year, New Star Soccer is one of the best footy simulators out there. You command the career of an up-and-coming player who has to battle the conflicting interests of playing the modern game with gambling, sponsor commitments and high-maintenance girlfriends.

If it sounds like a grown up version of The Sims, that's because it is, but you get to score 40-yard wonder-strikes and enjoy your character having a better life than you.

Download it from iTunes

6. Sky Go - Free (requires Sky subscription)

Sky Go

So you've been dragged away for the weekend, the biggest game of the season is live on Sky Sports, and you're not sure what's worse: missing the turning point in the title chase or that you pay for Sky Sports and you're stuck in a rainy caravan in Morecombe.

Sky Go is the essential app for any iOS rocking Sky Sports subscriber, and it lets you watch the game live on your iPhone. We'd urge you to tweet the hashtag '#winning' but you might miss a goal.

Download it from iTunes

7. Score! Classic Goals - free

Score

The App Store is filled with footy games which let you flick and swipe balls into the net with varying degrees of majesty, but Score does it best.

Why? Because each of the wonder goals hammered home by your index digit are reenactments of the finest strikes in international football history.

Eagled-eyed gamers will spot them from the tournaments of yesteryear, from Michael Owen's mazy England goal that humbled Argentina in '98 to Dennis Bergkamp's dreamy volley in '96.

The game's made better by the rating system of the goals, and you need to get them perfect to unlock the next set; think Angry Birds does football and you're there.

Download it from iTunes

8. TeamStream - free

TeamStream from The Bleacher Report

TeamStream is a news and information service from US sporting giant The Bleacher Report that lets you choose your favourite teams and then scrapes stories and tweets from around the web.

It's a good looking one-stop-shop for football news, although it tends to work better for the bigger clubs.

Download it from iTunes

9. BBC Sport - free

BBC Sport

The Beeb has just released its official sports app, which puts all the latest football news at your fingertips. Not only is it great for following the fascinating soap opera of football, but it also has live text commentary of the biggest games from the BBC's world-renowned team of journalists.

It's also fully customisable, so you can filter football stories from the vastly less important rugby, tennis and athletics news.

Download it from iTunes

10. MatchPint - free

Match Pint

You're in a strange city and it's almost the lunchtime kick-off - time to find a pub. Leaving it up to your mate who reckons "he knows somewhere nearby" is a sure-fire recipe for missing the first half or ending up in a friendly local Millwall hangout.

Leave nothing to chance with MatchPint, which find the games on TV and tells you which pubs are showing them, offering reviews of the establishment in question and even guiding you there using Google Maps.

It's one of many apps that do similar things, but the simple interface and multitude of users make it a top-scorer in our eyes.

Download it from iTunes

Sprint nabs an exclusive red HTC One complete with NextRadio app
Aug 15th 2013, 17:15, by JR Bookwalter

Sprint nabs an exclusive red HTC One complete with NextRadio app

Sprint is winding down the summer with red-hot news for HTC One fans as an exclusive color variant of the popular Android handset lands in stores tomorrow.

Sprint today announced that the HTC One will now be available in a sultry shade of crimson as part of an exclusive deal between the carrier and manufacturer.

Beginning Friday, Aug. 16, Sprint customers will be able to purchase an HTC One in either red, silver or black, priced at $199 with a two-year agreement for new customers and those with eligible upgrades.

Sprint's exclusive doesn't bode well for rumors that Verizon Wireless might get the HTC One in red, leaving Big Red customers to wait and wonder what the future may have in store for them. Verizon, oddly enough, is rumored to carry a blue variant, whenever the phone launches on its network.

Radio to go

Sprint is also the first U.S. carrier with access to NextRadio, a free app available from Google Play which brings live, interactive FM radio into the palm of your hand.

Instead of streaming from an internet connection, NextRadio taps into the FM tuner built into the HTC One or HTC EVO 4G LTE handsets, offering up to three times the battery life of other music apps.

There's just one caveat: Sprint customers will need to plug earbuds, headphones or speaker wire into the 3.5mm stereo audio jack of their handset, turning it into an antenna for the FM radio.

Should you be in the market for more than one new phone, all three shades of Sprint's HTC One are now included as part of the carrier's buy one, get one free promotion, which kicks off tomorrow and runs through Aug. 30.
