Updated: Samsung Galaxy F flaunts its 'Prime' metallic back in latest leak

Update: The same source has come back with another picture, one that looks slightly more legitimate than the last two (though without any confirmation from Samsung, we can't be sure if this is the real deal or not)

The new image, sent to Phone Arena, shows the S5 F doing a bit of sunbathing, letting us see that metallic-looking backplate with (at last) some light on it.

Galaxt S5 F

Original story below...

Samsung Galaxy F is believed to be the real name of the rumoured Galaxy S5 "Prime", and we might have a slightly clearer idea of what the mythical premium beast might look like.

Pictures that allegedly show off a pre-production model have been sent over to Phone Arena showing off a brushed metallic backplate. According to the anonymous tipster, the handset is a tad smaller than the Galaxy S5 with thinner bezels.

He also says the phone packs a Snapdragon 801 inside, but he adds that this will be upgraded to an 805 come launch, aligning with what we've already heard.

Heavy metal

S5 PrimeBefore its reveal there was a lot of talk about the Samsung Galaxy S5 having a QHD, which is why we're willing to believe these Prime rumours have credibility.

Furthermore, we can see a big fat Samsung Galaxy F across the screen in one of the images.

As for the back, Samsung may not actually go full metal but choose to take the LG path with a metallic-aping plastic design instead.

The phone's also rumoured to be rocking out with 3GB of RAM and a 16MP rear camera with OIS

Of course, as ever, don't assume these new pictures are legitimate. But we already have an idea in our heads of what a Prime might look like - and this isn't far off.

Better Apple Maps in iOS 8? Don't get your hopes up

Better Apple Maps in iOS 8? Don't get your hopes up

Apple Maps has made decent strides forwards since its disastrous launch, but there's still a fair bit of distance to go. A distance that won't be travelled by iOS 8, it seems.

That's the word from some sources in the know, speaking to TechCrunch, who claim that planned engineering work on Apple's map service has been delayed beyond the next big software installment.

"There were multiple improvements that didn't make it into iOS 8," one source said. "No map improvements planned for iOS 8 release were finished in time."

Earlier in the year we reported that Apple was planning to add public transit directions for public transport with iOS 8, something that would make its service more competitive with Google Maps.

The latest report adds that "more reliable" data was also set to be added, along with more points of interest (as was also mentioned in our previous story).

A separate report from last month pinned iOS 8.1 as the update that will bring transit routing, so we may at least get that feature sooner rather than later.

Wrong turn

The reason behind the lack of improvements? A lot of poor planning and internal politics, allegedly.

"Many developers left the company, no map improvements planned for iOS 8 release were finished in time," said a tipster.

"Mostly it was failure of project managers and engineering project managers, tasks were very badly planned, developers had to switch multiple times from project to project."

Another source backs this up, stating that "planning, project management and internal politics issues" were the biggest contributors.

Sorry folks, looks like you'll be relying on Google Maps for some time yet.

iOS 8 time-lapse camera mode shown off in most triumphant video demonstration

iOS 8 time-lapse camera mode shown off in most triumphant video demonstration

While it wasn't highlighted during Apple's keynote address at WWDC last week, the iOS 8 camera app will bring to the fore a neat time-lapse shooting mode.

Now, thanks to a video shot by YouTube user iTwe4kz over the weekend, we can get take a look at how it looks using an iPhone 5S.

The results, as you can see from the clip below, are rather spectacular.

The new version of the operating system was previewed at the firm's annual developers' conference and is already available to the firm's army of developers before a public release this autumn.

Alongside time-lapse, users of the new software will get interactive notifications, family sharing for iTunes accounts, access to most-used contacts in the multitasking view, new photo editing skills.

There's also the new Continuity feature set which will improve the way iOS devices play nice with Mac OS X devices.

Purported iPhone 6 casing is slimmer and may hint at a little extra glow

Purported iPhone 6 casing is slimmer and may hint at a little extra glow

The forthcoming Apple iPhone 6 is likely to be slimmer and more rounded, if pictures of casing posted online this weekend are the real deal.

The series of images obtained and shared by French blog Nowhereelse.fr, shows the rear and side of the casing, with all of the trimmings like volume rockers, lock switch and the SIM card tray in its usual position.

There's also room for another button on the side of the device, which has been speculated as a new home for the iPhone's power button.

The report that accompanied the pictures even suggested that Apple may even make the iconic logo flash and glow when the device receives a notification, although that seems a little gimmicky for Apple's tastes.

The countdown is on

The iPhone 6 is likely to arrive in September or October, if the company decides to stick to its traditional release schedule.

Speculation has suggested it'll arrive in two iterations, with a 4.7-inch and a 5.5-inch model.

Reports on Friday claimed the company has lined up a date in October to launch the iWatch, so perhaps we'll see the next generation smartphone at the same keynote.
