Half-Life 2's Alyx was almost Microsoft's voice assistant

Half-Life 2's Alyx was almost Microsoft's voice assistant

Windows Phone 8.1's personal assistant is set to arrive on devices in the UK within "weeks", but Microsoft wasn't always certain that Cortana was the name to go with.

Marcus Ash, Microsoft's Group Program Manager for Cortana, took to Twitter to reveal that one "early front runner" was Alyx.

As many of you already know, Alyx Vance is the name of Gordon Freeman's close ally in Half-Life 2 - a PC title considered to be one of the best FPS games of all time.

But with Halo being a franchise we associate more closely with Microsoft, we can see why it pulled out a character from that series instead.

More iPhone 6 leaks reinforce iPod design rumours

More iPhone 6 leaks reinforce iPod design rumours

Recently there's been a flood of iPhone 6 images appearing and the latest batch show it alongside an HTC One M8 and an iPhone 5S.

The pictures in question show a slim, rounded device that looks as though it's probably slightly thinner than even the 7.6mm iPhone 5S, which reminds us more of an iPod Touch than anything in the iPhone range.

You can also see that it's a little longer and wider than the iPhone 5S, as you'd expect, but a little shorter than the HTC One M8.

iPhone 6 and 5S

Déjà vu

These images come courtesy of weekly.ascii.jp and South Korean site Seeko, via G4Games and they're highly reminiscent of a similar set of images that emerged yesterday, suggesting that this may indeed be the real deal.

Of course this is almost certainly a dummy unit we're looking at rather than a final production model, but even so we reckon this is going to be pretty close to the shape of iPhone's to come.

Samsung set to buy Nuance to get its own Siri?

Samsung set to buy Nuance to get its own Siri?

Speech recognition specialist Nuance Communications has apparently put itself for sale according to a report published by the Wall Street Journal, citing sources close to the process.

The 40 year old company provides voice recognition products and services to the likes of Apple (who uses it for Siri) and Samsung; the latter is said to be the most likely suitor.

Shares of Nuance rose by nearly 10 % since rumours emerged, pushing the company's market capitalisation to nearly $6 billion (about £3.5 billion, AUD6.5 billion).

Last year, Samsung clearly spelt out the fact that it wanted to acquire more companies and currently sits on a cash chest of about $60 billion (about £35 billion, AUD65 billion).

Panasonic, Nintendo and Daimler AG are some of Nuance's most recognisable customers. Interestingly, the voice recognition technologies come from a flurry of other acquisitions (Lernout & Hauspie, Dragon) as well as IBM's patents speech tehnology rights.

Voice recognition however is only a small part of what Nuance does. It also offers virtual assistants, text-to-speech services, business analysis and visualization tools, optical character recognition software as well as document management solutions across a wide range of verticals.

Facebook's Slingshot app may take aim at Snapchat later today

Facebook's Slingshot app may take aim at Snapchat later today

Call it a clever bit of hype-building, call it a screw up, but Facebook's Snapchat competitor, Slingshot, made an early appearance on some App Stores last week before vanishing.

But it might be time for Slingshot to make its proper and official debut, with one source telling 9to5mac that today is the day we'll see Facebook roll its app out at some point today.

Remember Poke, Facebook's first attempt at doing the Snapchat thing? Think that but much better. The service will let users send photos and videos - a la Snapchat - to other users, with the option to deface said media with text and drawing.

Sling like you're winning

Perhaps the only real difference is that Slingshot also includes a "react" button that allows users to return an instant snapshot reaction to the latest picture of your friend's lunch.

The app will be completely free when it arrives. The source does say, however, that Facebook may hold back the rollout if it comes up against any last-minute snags.

We dropped Facebook a line but it refused to comment on the story.

One of OS X Yosemite's best features might not work for everyone

One of OS X Yosemite's best features might not work for everyone

The Handoff feature coming to OS X 10.10 Yosemite sounds promising, but it might not be for everyone.

The feature lets users connect their iPhones and iPads running iOS 8 to their Apple computers easily so they can trade files between them with a simple swipe and even make and answer calls and texts from their computers.

But according to German site Apfeleimer, the Handoff feature requires those devices have Bluetooth 4.0 LE.

This is a newer standard not found in computers prior to the 2011 MacBook Air, as well as the iPad 2, the only iOS device that will be iOS 8-compatible but lack the needed Bluetooth.

Unsubstantiated

The feature automatically detects when other Handoff-able gadgets are in proximity, so it would require your devices to be constantly watching out for one another.

Thus it's not too surprising that it would require Bluetooth 4.0 LE - which stands for "Low Energy," by the way - if it does use Bluetooth at all.

However it's worth noting that Apple's own website makes no mention of the Bluetooth requirement, saying only that both devices need to be on the same Wi-Fi network.

We've asked Apple to clarify the situation, but judging by how helpful the company usually is when it comes to press queries, don't hold your breath waiting for a response.

The Moto X+1 may split in two as microSD slot weasels in

The Moto X+1 may split in two as microSD slot weasels in

The Moto X+1 is so close to being real we can almost taste it, in supposedly two different versions of the device.

A Motorola source leaked to TK Tech News that the Lenovo-owned company will be coming out with a new 64GB variant of the Moto X+1, whereas the Moto X only came in 16GB and 32GB varieties.

Along with the extra built-in storage, the source says this extra addition will also come with a newly added MicroSD card slot.

The entire Moto X+1 line, meanwhile, could get a new boxy design and carbon-fiber-like pattern on the back similar to the Droid Ultra Maxx. At the same time the device has been said to be longer and thinner to accommodate the larger 5.2-inch screen.

The Moto X+1 won't completely stray away from the look of the original handset. The source says Motorola's next smartphone will still retain its rounded corners and a dimple on the back for the M-logo.

Coming this fall

Along with conferring new details about the Moto X+1, the same source confirmed several specs we already know. These include the device's upgraded 1080p AMOLED display, which should resolve better colors on top of being higher resolution than the 720p Moto X.

The Moto X+1 has also been said to come with 1.75GB of memory but this new source suggests that it could get the long-rumored 2GB of RAM. A processor was not included in the leak, but it seems very likely the handset will be powered with the Snapdragon 800 chip.

The source stated the Moto X+1 could be coming in very late August or early September.

  • Another phone we could see this fall is the iPhone 6, stay tuned for more
