Apple sued over iMessage bug that prevents texts reaching Android defectors

Apple sued over iMessage bug that prevents texts reaching Android defectors

Apple has been hit with a lawsuit over a persistent iMessage flaw that prevents texts being delivered to former iPhone users who departed the iOS ecosystem to use Android phones.

The long-existing flaw affects some Android users whose phone numbers were previously associated with iMessage through an iPhone.

The result is that iMessage users believe a text sent to an Android counterpart has been delivered, but the recipient never receives the message. Neither party is aware of the issue.

It appears the problem is device centric, with iPhones believing all numbers previously associated with iMessage are still attached to an iPhone. That means delivery will still be attempted over the web, rather than via cellular networks.

No real fix

The situation may now come to a head as a result of a class action lawsuit filed by a Samsung device owner, upset her communications with iPhone users have been curtailed.

Apple currently has no real solution for the problem, but current workarounds involve iPhone users deactivating their number on iMessage before switching, or, on the other side deleting and re-adding a contact.

It'll be interesting to see if this legal action encourages Apple to resolve the issue which blogger Adam Pash claims, the company has no idea how to fix.

He wrote: "Apple has completely hijacked my text messaging and my phone number portability (portability between devices, not networks). No one can fix this but Apple because it's a problem at the device level, which means people in my position have no recourse but to wait for Apple to figure out what the problem is."

HTC One 2013 crowd getting up to speed with ongoing Sense 6 update

HTC has begun the process of updating last year's crop of HTC One handsets with the latest version of the Sense user interface.

Sense 6, which arrived on the HTC One M8 earlier this year, has now been retrofitted to the Unlocked HTC One (M7) and the Developer Edition in the US, with more expected in the coming days and weeks.

In the UK, the update for all network versions and the Unlocked HTC One is currently listed as being in the "Integration" stage.

Integration is the third of five steps HTC uses to explain the process and is followed by "Certification" and then "Push to Customer."

Better Blinkfeed

For those lucky enough to have the latest version of Sense on their handset, they'll experience an improved UI, camera interface and more news sources within Blinkfeed.

Of course, the new version of Sense doesn't include the features associated with the M8's Duo Camera lenses and is closer to the software available on the newly-announced HTC One Mini 2.

LG G3 appears in white and gold ahead of official launch on May 27

The LG G3 won't be officially revealed until later this month, but pictures claiming to show the device in all it's golden glory have emerged online.

That ever-so-prolific Evleaks has been at it again this weekend, posting press renders of the device from multiple angles and in fancy shades of gold and white.

The sleek and super-thin looking handset has appeared in multiple leaks up until now, including a similar render revealed earlier this week showing the G3 from the same angles, but in a more familiar titanium.

The firm is expected to launch the phone at specially convened events in San Francisco, New York, London, Istanbul, Seoul and Singapore on May 27.

Tough act to follow

The G3 is the follow up for to the surprise smartphone hit of 2013, the LG G2.

It is expected to boast a more streamlined design alongside a 5.5 inch 2560 x 1440 display with a pixel density of 538 pixels per inch, making it the first high-end handset with a qHD display.

It is also thought the smartphone will boast LG's own Odin processor technology and will come in quad-core and octo-core flavours. All will be revealed in 10 days.

Rumour: Google to drop Nexus brand in favour of Android Silver

Rumour: Google to drop Nexus brand in favour of Android Silver

Google has no plans to launch a Nexus 6 smartphone, according to rumours this weekend.

Seasoned Twitter leak artist Evleaks is at it again, claiming Google plans to ditch the own-branded devices in favour of the forthcoming Android Silver initiative,

Android Silver, first rumoured in April, would see Google work more closely with select manufacturers in order to provide a premium Android experience with few software mods and regular updates.

Over the course of three separate tweets on Friday, Evleaks wrote: "There is no Nexus 6. Farewell, Nexus. Don't worry, there's a silver lining to this cloud... Android Silver, circa February 2015."

Silver lining

The Android Silver handsets are likely to be high-end devices, much like the current crop of Google Play Edition phones like the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4.

So the rumour goes, If the OEMs agree to scale back the amount of in-house apps pre-installed on the phones and agree to roll-out timely Android updates, then Google will help to promote the devices.

This, apparently is Google's solution to the longstanding problem of Android fragmentation, while also hoping to keep manufacturers like Samsung from forking the open source OS to such a vast extent.

Of course, the end of the Nexus era would be a blow to those who've become accustomed to the option of an affordable high-end handset like the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 over the last couple of years.
