More hints that the iPhone 6 screen will be tough as nails Apr 1st 2014, 10:19, by James Rogerson
There's been a lot of talk lately that the iPhone 6 may feature a sapphire glass screen and a new patent filing certainly seems to point in that direction. The patent is for an oleophobic (anti-smudge) coating that works on sapphire crystal. Apple has been using oleophobic coatings on its screens since the iPhone 3GS as it helps prevent fingerprint smudging, and a patent filing for a sapphire-compatible one suggests Apple is serious about getting sapphire into its screens. This follows evidence that Apple has invested in machines designed for building sapphire displays and a previous patent filing that shows a sapphire glass equipped iPhone, so the evidence is certainly mounting up. Ultra strong, ultra expensiveOn the other hand there's also been suggestions that the costs are just too high and even if it does happen it might not be good news. Sapphire crystal is super strong which could make it an ideal replacement for Gorilla Glass, but it can also be heavier and lead to dimmer devices and shorter battery life. Still, whether or not it arrives in time for the iPhone 6 there's enough evidence to suggest that Apple is pretty serious about a sapphire future. As well as sapphire screens we may see interchangeable camera lenses in the iPhone's future, as another recent Apple patent details a bayonet mount which can be used to fasten different lens types to an iPhone or iPod, though with this being the first mention of it we'd be surprised if it's something we see in the iPhone 6. | Do these pictures reveal the super-slim iPhone 6? Apr 1st 2014, 09:19, by Hugh Langley
Some new pictures of what could be the iPhone 6 have been posted online, as another source claims that the 5.5-inch version could be delayed beyond September. The new pictures, posted on Weibo, allegedly come from a source within Apple manufacturer Foxconn and show what looks like the back of a thinner iPhone. It's interesting to see that the camera lens is protruding as that chimes with an earlier rumour, however we also heard at the time that Apple may have it flush by the time the phone actually launches.
As these new pictures surface, a report from Reuters says that production of the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 will start in May but that the rumoured 5.5-inch model is facing manufacturing difficulties - and that mass production is now expected to kick off "several months" after the 4.7-inch handset. Numbers gameThere's been endless chat about a larger iPhone landing at the same time as the 4.7-incher, but recently one person familiar with the going-ons at Apple's supply chain said that we'd most likely see the phablet arrive later than its smaller sibling - could these alleged manufacturing problems the reason? Then let's not forget that other report that Apple's bigger handset will actually stretch to 5.7 inches. In sum, most of the dimensions are anyone's guess right now, but if these latest photos are to be believed, we can at least bank on it being slimmer. And that's definitely good news, right? | HTC One (M8) Mini might be here as soon as May Apr 1st 2014, 09:18, by James Rogerson -470-75.JPG)
The HTC One (M8) mini seems to be an almost foregone conclusion at this point and it looks like the wait might not be long either. 3G.co.uk is reporting that an unnamed source inside a UK retailer has confirmed that the handset will be arriving in May. The source goes on to say that it will have the same aluminium uni-body design as its big brother, but a smaller 4.5-inch screen and a single camera, rather than the Duo Camera found on the HTC One (M8). Though as we can't put a name to the source it's hard to say how accurate any of this is. Still, this isn't the first time we've heard about the handset and HTC released a mini version of last years HTC One, though the timing is slightly more questionable as the HTC One Mini didn't hit the market until August, which would mean just nine months between last year's mini and this year's. Miniature marvelThe specs don't raise any red flags though, we'd expect a similarly premium design and a 4.5-inch screen would make sense given that the full fat HTC One (M8) has a 5-inch display. Now we just need the HTC One (M8) Max to show its face and we'll have the full suite of this years expected One models. | Did Google sell Moto too soon? Probably not, but the Moto G sure is popular Mar 31st 2014, 21:25, by Chris Smith
The success of the high-spec-low-pice Moto G handset has given Lenovo-owner Motorola a significant platform to build upon, according to the latest research figures. Kantar Worldpanel says Moto came from absolutely nowhere to snap up a 6 per cent share of the market in the three months leading up to the end of February 2014. Considering the ultra-affordable Moto G was the only Motorola handset widely available in the UK until the Moto X arrived on February 1, that's some pretty solid going. The price point, which has redefined what users expect from a budget smartphone was the prime motivator for buyers, according to Kandar, which claims over half of sales came from the 16-24 age group. Glory days on the way back? The news comes, not long after Google dispensed of Motorola (well, everything but the patents, of course) and palmed it off on Chinese firm Motorola. The figures are sure to please the company's new masters as it seeks to see Moto's glory days renewed. Elsewhere in its findings, Kandar claims Android continues to lead the way in the OS-stakes in Europe. The Google-owned OS is currently rocking a 68.9 per cent share of the pie, while iOS is on 19 per cent and Windows Phone is on 9.7 per cent. The remaining 2.4 per cent? We'd imagine BlackBerry is in there somewhere. | T-Mobile disrupts again, pans employee discounts Mar 31st 2014, 21:10, by Kevin Lee
T-Mobile, and more often its President John Legere specifically, have pulled off some serious stunts in the past year to shift the appearance of the US wireless industry. Now the mobile network company is at it again. This time the Uncarrier announced it is axing its Advantage Program, which offers monthly plans at an employee discount rate for new customers starting on April 1. Existing beneficiaries, meanwhile, will see their discount phased out on April 25. But it's not all bad news. In place of the Advantage Program, T-Mobile will replace the employee rate plan discounts for any current enrollees with $25 reward cards every time they purchase a new device. "The old programs were designed to help big carriers close big corporate contracts, with employees as bargaining chips," Legere explained in a release. Ever the rebel, Legere continued to say that his company isn't "playing that game anymore. This change is about simplifying wireless for everyone … including employees of small and large companies alike." One more stepThe Uncarrier's latest move will be a bit of a hit for small and large businesses. However, government employees and members of the military will continue to receive the discount. This is definitely the most underwhelming disruptive move T-Mo has pulled off as of recent. But given the company has gotten rid of early termination fees, added free international calling and messaging, implemented its Next device upgrade program, and gotten rid of contracts - we'd bet the pink carrier has something even more exciting lined up for the future. As Legere mentions at the end of the announcement, "we're not done yet. Stay tuned." | Samsung's next Windows Phone might be outdated by the time it arrives Mar 31st 2014, 18:04, by Michael Rougeau
Word is Samsung is planning to ship a new Windows Phone handset in April, but that it won't be packing Windows Phone 8.1 out of the box. The major Windows Phone update is expected to arrive during the month, but Samsung's next Windows Phone could be stuck on Windows Phone 8, according to The Verge. The site spoke with "sources" who said Samsung's new Windows Phone device, previously referred to as "Huron," will be called the Samsung Ativ SE, and that it will ship in April on Verizon. But while it may not arrive with WP 8.1 already installed, the update will go out for the handset when it's ready; Microsoft has already confirmed that all Windows Phone 8 smartphones will eventually be updated to WP8.1. Playing favoritesSamsung has focused its efforts on Android lately, with its extremely successful Galaxy S series in many ways becoming the flagship for Google's mobile OS. The Korean company has for months been rumored to have a new Windows Phone in the pipeline, though most reports predicted it would launch with Windows Phone 8.1 this spring. The Ativ SE is said to be similar in specs to the Galaxy S4, with a 5-inch 1080p display, a 13MP camera, and the same brushed "metal" texture on the back (visible in the image above). In addition this report says it will sport a quad-core Snapdragon 800 chip, 16GB of storage, 2GB of memory and a microSD slot. Expect to see much more of the Ativ SE in April. | Rdio, Crackle, VUDU cast away with Chromecast support Mar 31st 2014, 17:51, by JR Bookwalter
Google's inexpensive HDMI dongle is getting a little more useful today, thanks to the arrival of support from three popular streaming media services that now allow casting on the cheap to an HDTV. Google's Chrome apps web page has been updated today with the addition of two new services capable of being cast to the company's $35 (UK£30, about AU$38) Chromecast, with a third stealthily enabling support thanks to weekend updates. Streaming radio favorite Rdio separately announced Chromecast support, allowing listeners to cast songs, albums, stations and playlists to any HDMI-equipped television, thanks to a Monday update to the company's free iOS and Android apps. Ad-supported movie and TV show provider Crackle has also jumped into the Chromecast fray with its own updates on Monday, which also offer a number of UI navigation and video playback enhancements on both iOS and Android. Chromecast voodooAlthough not officially recognized on the Chrome website, Walmart-owned US VOD rental and purchase provider VUDU also fired up Chromecast support over the weekend, thanks to updates across its website, iOS and Android platforms. First teased on the company's official blog earlier this month, Chromecast support allows VUDU fans to stream HDX-quality movie and television content without the need for a set-top box, even from a Chrome web browser on a desktop or laptop with the Google Cast extension installed. Chromecast support also enables full control over the video playback and closed captions from mobile devices without missing a beat, even while multitasking in other apps at the same time. Keep in mind that not all available VUDU content is eligible for Chromecast support due to studio licensing restrictions, so be sure to try another title if you don't see the cast icon show up on your first attempt. - Check out our review of the Chromecast-friendly iPad Air!
      | Samsung Galaxy S5's screen dubbed 'the best performing smartphone display' Mar 31st 2014, 15:51, by John McCann
You may not think that there's much difference between the 5-inch, 441ppi screen on the Galaxy S4 and the 5.1-inch, 432ppi display on the Samsung Galaxy S5. Both sport the same 1080 x 1920 resolution and boast Super AMOLED technology to ensure a bright, colourful display, but the Galaxy S5 has been shown to perform way above its predecessor. In fact DisplayMate, who carried out its in-depth screen tests on the S5, S4 and Galaxy Note 3, dubbed the Galaxy S5 "the best performing smartphone display that we have ever tested." We've got to a point where simply stuffing phones full of higher resolutions and greater pixel densities won't suffice, and this has led manufacturers to develop the technology behind the screens themselves. Shining starThe handsets were put through a number of tests and the Galaxy S5 was found to be 22% brighter than the S4, and 13% up on the Note 3, while its new super dimmer mode impressed by keeping brightness low, but quality high. There's good news in the battery department too, as DisplayMate found that even though the Galaxy S5's screen is bigger and brighter, it delivered 27% better power efficiency than the Galaxy S4. Both the HTC One (M8) and Sony Xperia Z2 use LCD display technologies, and DisplayMate reckons the Galaxy S5's OLED screen is around 27% more power efficient than the rival LCD screen tech. The Samsung Galaxy S5 looks pretty impressive in the screen department and we'll be putting it to the test during our in-depth review, alongside the Xperia Z2 and One (M8) soon. More in depth test results can be found over at DisplayMate. | |
