More ads to invade Twitter timelines, offering one-click app downloads

More ads to invade Twitter timelines, offering one-click app downloads

Twitter is set to introduce 15 types of new advertisements into timelines, which could allow users to download mobile apps with a single click according to reports this weekend.

The Wall Street Journal says the company has briefed advertisers on new ways to use Twitter cards to engage users, with the first batch of new products coming next month, the report claimed.

The article says Twitter is looking to replicate Facebook's success by testing a mobile app install unit, which would give it a better shot at earning business from download-focused mobile developers.

The card would feature a download button that would take users directly to the App Store or the Google Play store, making it easier for mobile users.

Better ads or more ads?

The same feature on Facebook has proved massively popular with advertisers who're seeing big download yields for their investments.

The report says Twitter is also planning to add a tool that allows users to enter competitions with a single click that sends their email address to the advertiser.

Users will hope that the new range of ads won't mean their feeds are clogged up with more promoted tweets, but at least these new tools look like they'll be more useful for consumers.

Huawei Ascend P7 prototype shows up without 2K display

Huawei Ascend P7 prototype shows up without 2K display

Huawei's flagship Ascend P7 smartphone might have skipped out MWC 2014, but it's clearly not done teasing us.

The Ascend P7 has been spotted again in some newly leaked images picked up by Nowhereelse.fr, possibly in prototype form. While the photos don't really show anything different from previously leaked renderings, we finally know what the actual home screen might look like.

From the side shot seen below, the phone looks to be a super thin slab, just like its predecessor, the Ascend P6.

Huawei, Ascend P7, smartphones, Android, rumors, early reports, Newstrack

The phone strongly resembles the Sony Xperia Z2, even down to the same side button layout. Towards the center both handsets feature a volume rocker plus a round button for the combination lock and camera trigger.

There's not much going on the backside of the phone other than a very glossy surface that clearly reflects the shooter taking these clandestine snaps ... with an iPhone.

Another 2K phone falls to the wayside?

Huawei, Ascend P7, smartphones, Android, rumors, early reports, Newstrack

Earlier reports suggested the Ascend P7 would be a 5-inch quad HD display monster. To help drive the smartphone's massive 2,560 x 1,440 resolution display, a 2GHz octa-core processor would need to be built-in.

However, the phone these picture purportedly show has a 5-inch 1920 x 1080 resolution screen and 1.6GHz quad-core processor. There was no note on whether the smartphone would still come sporting a higher-resolution 8MP front-facing camera, though it looks to have a 13-megapixel one in the rear.

The French blog site believes the images are of a lower spec prototype, so when the P7 launches for real, it may have these higher specs.

Huawei is hosting a press event May 7, so we won't have to wait for long to find out if the 2K display made the cut.

Verizon finally announced its Samsung Galaxy S5 release details
Apr 4th 2014, 18:53, by Michael Rougeau

Verizon finally announced its Samsung Galaxy S5 release details

Last as usual, Verizon has finally announced its Samsung Galaxy S5 availability, and the carrier is taking pre-orders now.

Other major US carriers, including AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and US Cellular, announced their Galaxy S5 releases in March, but Verizon apparently knows the value of suspense.

Like the other US carriers Verizon is offering the latest Samsung flagship for $199 with a two-year contract.

Verizon is also selling the S5 contract-free for $599 or for 24 monthly payments of $25.22 through Verizon Edge.

Read the fine print

Those monthly payments add up, strangely, to $605.28.

To add a twist Verizon is also offering a second phone - either another S5, an HTC One (M8), or a Samsung Ativ SE - for free to customers who buy a Galaxy S5 on-contract and agree to sign up for a second two-year contract.

It seems there's a small wrinkle for users who choose a second Galaxy S5 thoug, as they'll have to put up $50 up front and get a $50 mail-in rebate debit card in exchange, according to Verizon's fine print.

The Galaxy S5 is still expected to ship April 11.

BlackBerry Kopi looks lovely in these newly leaked shots

BlackBerry Kopi looks lovely in these newly leaked shots

At this rate, BlackBerry's budget Kopi handset is quickly feeling like a handset we might actually see hit the market.

The Kopi reemerged last month, and now a new set of images of the device have surfaced on Techrum, a Vietnamese tech site, giving us a closer look at the phone from every angle.

Along with getting a clearer look at the device, the site highlighted some specs, including the device's 3.2-inch display. As we've previously noted, the phone is rumored to have a faster Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8960 processor than the BlackBerry Q5, but no support for 4G LTE.

Meanwhile, tucked underneath Kopi's back cover is a 2,100mAh removable battery. On the exterior, there's an HDMI port for connecting the phone to an external display as well as a microUSB port.

Keep on keeping

Research in Motion, Blackberry, BlackBerry Kopi, BlackBerry Café, Newstrack

Last December it seemed like BlackBerry was all set to forget about Kopi after the company struck it and another handset named the Café from its future releases.

But even with this low-cost device reappearing, it was always destined for emerging markets, meaning if it ever does release, it's doubtful whether anyone in the US, Europe or Australia would be able to buy it.

According to an earlier report, the phone was "still making its way to BlackBerry partners." So for now the BlackBerry Kopi is still going through a testing phase before its full release later this year.

The Phone Show: Is the camera on the HTC One M8 good enough?

The Phone Show: Is the camera on the HTC One M8 good enough?

If you've had a chance to check out our HTC One (M8) review yet, you'll know we called it "a brilliant smartphone with very few flaws", as well on commenting on how the handset "strikes the perfect blend of design, performance and innovation without compromising in any area."

"But what about the camera?" we hear you cry. HTC's decision stick with the same 2 Ultrapixel/ 4.1 megapixel lens we saw in last year's HTC One has caused concern amongst some smartphone fans: certainly when compared to the 16MP+ lenses you'll find on the back of the Galaxy S5 and Xperia Z2, HTC seems to have dropped the ball a bit. Or has it?

Well, the short answer is no, and you'll find out why in this week's Phone Show. As well as debunking the assumptions that bigger is always better in the megapixel wars, we also have some essential tips for all you budding smartphone shutterbugs.

Sink your teeth into the latest episode below, and be sure to leave us your thoughts.

Samsung Ativ Core tipped as firm's first Windows Phone 8.1 handset
Apr 4th 2014, 17:19, by JR Bookwalter

Samsung Ativ Core tipped as firm's first Windows Phone 8.1 handset

Apparently not content with its wide lead in the Android market or having its own Tizen OS backup plan, Samsung appears to be gearing up to launch a handset running yet another operating system.

SamMobile caught wind that the Korean firm plans to follow up its just-announced Ativ SE Windows Phone 8 device for Verizon with a second one a little further down the food chain.

Billed as the Samsung Ativ Core, the as-yet unannounced handset may be the manufacturer's first to run Windows Phone 8.1, which Microsoft made official during this week's Build.

The handset is reportedly far enough along the supply chain that it could land in stores around the same time as Nokia's latest Lumias.

Fair to middling

While Samsung's Ativ SE offers Verizon customers a pretty sweet assortment of Windows Phone 8-enabled technology, the Ativ Core appears to feature far less.

The report details a 4.5-inch display with a 720p resolution, 1GB of RAM and 2,100mAh battery, although there's no firm details on what kind of processing power is behind Ativ Core.

Ativ Core's camera may hold more promise, with tipsters offering contradicting claims of either 8MP or 13MP resolution, though it will probably wind up on the lower end of the snapper spectrum.

No word on carriers, pricing or other launch details have turned up yet, but we expect it to launch before long.

In Depth: Everything you need to know about your next smartphone

In Depth: Everything you need to know about your next smartphone

The iPhone 6, Nexus 6 and LG G3

It's 2014 and your mobile is looking a little dated against the latest offerings on the market, so it's time to pick out a new smartphone.

Waterproof bodies, high definition displays, all metal frames and fingerprint scanning technology are all taking the mobile market by storm this year as manufacturers look to grab our attention.

Being just a few months into the year we're constantly on the lookout for the hottest handsets, bringing you all the latest on what to expect below.

Some top notch mobiles have already launched though, so if you simply cannot wait to get your hands on a new smartphone head over to page two where we give you a smorgasbord of reviews on 2014's best offerings so far.

2014's big hitters
iPhone 6: expect a bigger screen, health monitor and iOS 8
HTC One M8: the first five star phone of the year is a stunner
Sapphire screens: boasting super strong glass protection
2K and 4K displays: your eyes could well be in for quite a treat

iPhone 6

An invite to the iPhone 6 launch will be one of the hottest tickets of the year, and we expect Tim Cook to take the stage in San Francisco during September 2014.

What Apple actually has up its sleeve is a still a little bit of a mystery, but various rumors suggest we'll see two screen sizes from the Cupertino this year - both of which are said to be larger than the 4-inch offering on the 5S and 5C.

As rival handsets continue to get bigger, the iPhone is getting left behind so reports of 4.7-inch, and either a 5.5- or 5.7-inch, iPhone 6 aren't particularly difficult to believe.

iPhone 6

Apple looks set to protect those supersized screen with the ultra-tough Sapphire Crystal glass, something which already features on the iPhone 5S, covering the rear camera and front fingerprint scanner.

There also seems to be some confusion around the successor to the 5C, with some saying the plastic clad phone will be canned, while others are saying the opposite as it points to Apple's new 'two tier' approach to affordability in the market.

The talk of a larger screen aside, one of the other key elements expected to headline on the iPhone 6 is an increased focused on health and fitness, with leaks pointing towards a new Healthbook application and a variety of new sensors hidden inside the handset.

LG G3

The G2 was the surprise hit of 2013, with the Korean firm putting itself back on the mobile map after the success of the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 and we can't wait to see what the LG G3 has in store for us.

LG G2

We're expecting to see the LG G3 arrive sometime between May and July and it's being tipped to sport a super high definition QHD display.

That would translate to a resolution of 1440 x 2560, a serious treat for your retinas - although we fear for the G3's battery life if this is the case. Then again, the brand is one of the very best at eking out more juice from the power pack, so if anyone can do it we'd punt for LG.

The G3 might join the likes of Apple and Samsung in the fingerprint scanning war, as the phone is tipped to sport the security tech, while under the hood you could well find Qualcomm's powerful Snapdragon 801 processor - or even the all new 805, given it will probably arrive later in the year.

Nexus 6

There are murmurings that Google may can its Nexus range of smartphones in favor of Google Editions, but that hasn't stopped talk of the Nexus 6.

When you see the Nexus logo splashed across a smartphone you can expect a relatively decent level of specs at a price which undercuts the high-flyers in the market.

Google Nexus 6

LG has been responsible for the pervious two Nexus handsets, and it's the Korean firm which is currently favorite to produce the Nexus 6 - which could be based on the LG G3.

Expect the camera department to be dialed down a little, no microSD slot and a screen which isn't quite as cutting edge as the flagship competition, although we'd expect it to still be a full HD resolution.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4

While Samsung hasn't confirmed its next installment of its popular phablet series, we're all expecting it to launch the Galaxy Note 4 later this year.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Previous iterations have been shown the light of day at IFA in Berlin, which takes place in early September, and we'd put our money on the show being used by Samsung again for the Galaxy Note 4 launch.

There's currently not much information surrounding the Note 4 at the moment, but you can probably expect a larger screen (up from 5.7 inches on the Note 3), faster processor and a bumped up camera (possibly 20MP) to all be on board.

It may even inherit the waterproof body and heart rate monitor from the Galaxy S5.

The top phones already here

Of course, not all of us can wait for LG and Apple to sort themselves out and launch some new handsets - you just want to buy your new smartphone right now.

Luckily we've already seen some top handsets launched this year and you'll be spoilt for choice.

HTC One M8

The new HTC One M8 is special. It had quite the shoes to fill following on from the top-rated HTC One, but it's managed to snaffle a five star TechRadar rating of its own.

This is the best looking and feeling Android handset on the market and only the iPhone 5S comes close in terms of premium build quality.

HTC One M8

It's not just surface deep quality either, as the HTC One M8 also features an excellent full HD 5-inch display, powerful Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor and Android 4.4 KitKat with the firm's new Sense 6.0 overlay.

The novel Duo Camera setup on the rear is certainly intriguing, but HTC has opted to stick to its rather confusing ultrapixel camera which translates to a lowly 4MP snapper. It's not the worst phone camera we've used, but it certainly isn't the best.

Samsung Galaxy S5

The Samsung Galaxy S5 surprised us slightly by revealing itself during the hustle and bustle of MWC 2014 in Barcelona, but slightly hidden launch event aside it's still a force to be reckoned with.

Samsung has built up a supremely strong brand around its flagship Galaxy smartphones and the S5 is no different - it's the firm's best offering to date.

If may not be as big of a step up on the Galaxy S4 as we hoped for, but the dust and water resistant body and fingerprint scanner hidden under the physical home key are welcome additions.

Samsung Galaxy S5

For those of you looking to spend a lot of time watching movies or playing games on your new smartphone then the Galaxy S5 should be in your sights as it's been dubbed the best smartphone display on the market.

There's also an interesting heart rate monitor on the rear of the handset which will no doubt catch the eye of fitness fanatics, but its use is a little limited - you're better off getting the Gear Fit if you want to monitor your pulse.

Sony Xperia Z2

The Sony Xperia Z2 is actually the third flagship handset to come out of the Japanese firm in little over 12 months, but don't let that put you off considering it for your next smartphone.

Sony has learnt its lessons from the Xperia Z1 and improved the contrast ratio and viewing angles of the 5.2-inch full HD display on the Xperia Z2.

This pulls it nicely in line with the Galaxy S5 and One M8, while its sturdy water resistant metal frame feels premium and solid in the hand, if not a little cold and industrial.

Sony Xperia Z2

There's plenty of power under the hood with a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB of RAM and Adreno 330 GPU, while a 20.7MP camera resides on the rear.

If you've already got a Xperia Z1 you may be looking a little enviously in the direction of the Z2, but there's really no need for you to upgrade. At the rate Sony is going, the Z3 will probably be out before the iPhone 6 darkens our shelves.

Samsung discovers how to harness graphene for super strong flexible displays

Samsung discovers how to harness graphene for super strong flexible displays

Samsung's long-running endeavours to create truly flexible displays for its mobile devices have received a massive boost that will enable it to commercialise a new super-strong material.

The scientists at Samsung's Advanced Institute of Technology and Sungkyunkwan University say they've been able to synthesise a crystal of graphene, which the company says is ideal for consumer electronics.

The super-thin material is more durable than steel, according to Samsung and has hundred times greater electron mobility than silicon, making it a prime candidate for flexi-screen smartphones, watches and more.

The company said it has "grown" a single graphene crystal into a large area, while maintaining its electronic and mechanical properties.

Significant breakthrough

"This is one of the most significant breakthroughs in graphene research in history," said the laboratory leaders at SAIT's Lab.

"We expect this discovery to accelerate the commercialisation of graphene, which could unlock the next era of consumer electronic technology."

The results, which will be published in Science Magazine and ScienceExpress, could help Samsung develop its range of flexible gadgets beyond the Galaxy Round handset launched late last year.
