Apple's iPen could be far more awesome than we thought Feb 5th 2014, 12:44, by Thomas Thorn
The Apple iPen has popped up again showing off more features that will help it become smarter than the average stylus. Whilst it won't be out to steal picnic baskets the latest patents, picked up by Patently Apple, show that an Apple stylus could be a modular device (in a similar way to Motorola's Project Ara smartphone) so users can pick and choose what they want as well as upgrading features. Amongst these features are the abilities to project images, work as a laser pointer or transform into a Dictaphone. Another example suggests a built in camera allowing the stylus to detect movement in the same way as an optical mouse or double up as a scanner. Want more?In-air gestures could also be supported but the use of gyro/accelerometers; the swipe could see the turn of a page or move to a next slide or double as a mouse replacement. Wireless charging is apparently set to feature in any upcoming iPen, as well as the ability to use standard non-rechargeable alkaline or zinc-carbon batteries. Don't go expecting a 9-volt or D battery though. The leaked iPen might not be enough to signal an upcoming 12.9-inch iPad Pro, but with each of these features coming with a very heavy professional slant we're not going to bet against an Apple stylus launching alongside a larger iPad. Either way with the iPhone 6, iPad Pro, and iWatch all set to make their debuts in 2014, we could be about to see Apple's biggest year yet. | Apple's iPen could be far more awesome than we thought Feb 5th 2014, 12:44, by Thomas Thorn

It has been 3 months since the launch of Google's latest mobile OS, Android 4.4 KitKat, and current figures show that it is now on just under 2% of all Android devices. This shows a rise of 0.4% since January, taking KitKat up to a total of 1.8% devices that logged into the Google Play Store during the week ending February 4 2014. Owners of even the latest flagships like the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4 are still waiting for their updates, although both handsets are expected to see the upgrade in the next few weeks. That 1.8% then is made up solely of Google's Nexus line such as the Nexus 7, Nexus 5 and the ageing Nexus 4, Motorola's Moto G and Moto X, and the Google Play editions of the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4 which are only available in the US. Its all Google at the momentFaces may be left a little red at Mountain View given the superfast uptake of iOS updates on the iPhone and iPad, but Google's working with multiple manufacturers and devices, whereas Apple controls the whole iOS show. At this stage in Android 4.1 Jelly Bean's life uptake was still languishing on 1.2%. Interestingly though, Jelly Bean still seems to be growing thanks to the launches of recent handsets that hadn't been able to get their hands on the latest OS before launch. With MWC 2014 just around the corner you can expect Android 4.4 KitKat to grow rapidly as all manner of devices made for Android 4.4 KitKat are launched, including the Samsung Galaxy S5. Hopefully it won't be too long before we see KitKat as the dominant Android force given its ability to run on handsets with as low as 512MB RAM. Maybe that means we'll finally see the death of Gingerbread - the three-year-old OS still commands 20% of Android users. - The HTC M8 will definitely come with Android 4.4 KitKat.

 | You only live twice: Apple may resurrect iPhone 4 Feb 5th 2014, 10:55, by John McCann
Apple may be about to resurrect the iPhone 4 which it finally killed off last year after the launch of the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C. According to Indian site The Economic Times, Apple is planning on bringing its fourth generation smartphone back to life - but only for developing markets. The news apparently comes from three senior executives, but there's no firm indication of who they are. They claim Apple has already produced new iPhone 4 stock, with handsets sporting a December 2013 build date and estimates suggesting 50,000 to 60,000 units have already entered India. Already on sale?Brazil, India and Indonesia are apparently the three territories in line for some iPhone 4 love - although a quick look on the Brazilian Apple store reveals that the phone is on sale. It's not clear if this iPhone 4 listing has always been on the site and Brazil still has some stock left, or if it has been recently re-added to the site in light of the phone going back into production. We have approached Apple for more information, and we'll update this article if we hear back from the Cupertino firm. If Apple really is rebooting the iPhone 4, does this mean we could see other iDevices brought back from the dead? Perhaps the iPhone 5 will re-emerge to challenge the 5C - we can but dream. - Never mind the past, what does the iPhone 6 hold for us?
      | Samsung Galaxy S5's fingerprint scanner will be better than Apple's Feb 5th 2014, 10:22, by Hugh Langley
The possibility of a fingerprint scanner has been the biggest talking point of the Samsung Galaxy S5. The latest? There will be one, and it'll be homemade. According to Korean news source etnews, Samsung is developing an in-house swipe fingerprint scanner for the upcoming flagship. This would act differently to the sensor found on the iPhone 5S, and would work by detecting a swipe across the screen. The latest comes just a few days after @evleaks shared a screenshot of a 7-zip file named FingerprintService.apk, captioning it "From Samsung Galaxy S5". Touchy feelySo far, we've seen contradicting reports on whether the S5 will rock a fingerprint sensor or not. A Samsung official apparently told the Korean Times last year that the company is "not yet developing the technology". Then again, we've heard differently from other sources since then. So don't take the latest as any sort of confirmation, but a fingerprint sensor is looking more likely once again. We'll know for sure soon enough - the S5 is getting its big reveal at MWC 2014. | Samsung Galaxy S5's fingerprint scanner will be better than Apple's Feb 5th 2014, 10:22, by Hugh Langley

With the HTC One 2 launch expected in the coming weeks, the stage has been set for a whole raft of leaks to start making their way onto the world wide web. We've not heard of Twitter tipster HTCFamily_RU before but they have managed to get themselves a pretty convincing looking photo of the back of the upcoming HTC One successor. Just a reminder though, until HTC officially launch the HTC M8 things are still open to change so we're still advising a pinch of salt.
The photo matches previous leaks giving away the second sensor as well as matching leaks from fellow leak artist evleaks who tweeted that the HTC M8 will look "strikingly similar" to the One. But what is that sensor?Unfortunately the image isn't clear enough to give away what the second sensor will work as although our best guesses have it as a secondary camera for image refocusing or a fingerprint scanner (like on the HTC One Max). Included in the image is also a dual LED flash that will give the HTC M8 increased night time photography capabilities in the same way as the iPhone 5S. Unfortunately there is no photographs of the front of the HTC M8 (or HTC One Two, HTC Two or One+), although HTCFamily_RU does have a rather simple line sketch showing the front looking identical to the HTC One with capacitive buttons. | HTC One 2 leaked again - is it enough of an upgrade? The public release of Apple's iOS 7.1 could just just a few weeks away, with reports claiming the company has no plans to release more beta versions of the software to developers. BGR reports the company's beta testing of the first major update to the revamped iOS 7 is complete after five beta versions, with only a gold master version to arrive before it becomes available to consumers. According to the site's source, Apple plans to drop iOS 7.1 in early March, which ties into previous speculation. Months in the makingiOS 7.1 has been almost five months in the making and will offer some visual refinements and potentially introduce a few new features, such as iOS in the Car. The company also hopes the update will fix the random reboots, app crashes, and general sluggishness experienced by some users since iOS 7 fell in September 2013. It has not yet been suggested that Apple plans to address the startling drop-off in battery life experienced by older iPhone owners since upgrading from iOS 6. What would you like to see Apple introduce or fix with iOS 7.1? Apple's entry into the wireless charging arena may see the company introduce a far more advanced solution than current generation charging mats, according to a patent recently granted to the company. The patent, filed with the US Patents and Trademarks Office, explains how different functions could be performed depending on how a phone, media player or camera is placed on the inductive charging pad. For example, if an iPhone were to be placed face-down, the mat it would charge the device, while positioning it face-up would also see data synced with a nearby laptop or desktop computer. Beyond that, the smart dock would also be able to recognise the precise positioning of the device to automatically commence the data transfer, according to the filing. Not your average chargerAccording to the patent, the dock would also feature a dedicated processor, integrated power supply, other I/O ports and other hardware features. Within the literature for "Device orientation based docking functions," Apple explained: "A user device such as a smart phone, digital camera, or personal media player may be docked to a docking device, which may allow for charging and data transmittal. Some docking devices may provide induction charging to charge a user device, when the user device is placed on a charging surface. "The user device may include circuitry which may respond to a magnetic field provided by the charging surface. Data may be transmitted between a user device and a docking device, or a host device, when the user device is docked." Of course, it goes without saying that just because Apple has filed this patent, doesn't mean the tech is definitely on the way. However, it does tie in with recent reports claiming the company is working on building inductive, solar and motion-powered batteries for the next generation of iOS devices and wearables. | Samsung Windows Phone 8.1 'Huron' handset sneaks online Feb 4th 2014, 22:34, by Michael Rougeau
Samsung's rumored Windows Phone handset just can't stay out of the spotlight - and now there's finally a picture to bolster its confidence. The photo above was tweeted by @evleaks, the same tipster who on Monday outed the phone's supposed codename, "Huron," and said it will be carried on the US' Verizon network. Along with the image came the cryptic caption: "Windows Phone 8.1-powered Samsung SM-W750V 'Huron' for Verizon Wireless." The leaker also said the Samsung SM-W750V resembles a Galaxy S phone, and if this picture is legit then that appears to be accurate. There's one small difference, of course, and that's the Windows button near the bottom. Galaxy WOther than that windowed widget, Huron looks just like a Galaxy S4, with similar volume and lock/power buttons on the sides, and a resembling shape and layout overall. The body also appears to be plastic, just like Samsung's Galaxy phones. But with the Galaxy line so closely associated with Android, could Samsung get away with slapping "Galaxy" on a Windows Phone handset? The smartphone's final name is currently unknown, but "Galaxy W" does sort of have a ring to it. Harbinger of Windows Phone 8.1?The gadget website T3 says the Samsung Huron will sport a quad-core Snapdragon CPU and an Adreno 305 GPU, information it attributes to evleaks. Just as important as these internals is the Twitter tipster's claim that Huron will be powered by Windows Phone 8.1, the next major update for the Windows Phone 8 platform. Among the anticipated features of WP8.1 are a notification center, an Siri-like assistant named Cortana, and Bluetooth 4.0. The update is expected sometime around Microsoft's Build conference in April, meaning we may be hollering at Huron in the coming months. - Catch up on Samsung's latest flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S4, with TechRadar's in-depth review!
      | No surprises here: Galaxy S5 Active and Galaxy S5 Zoom likely on the way Feb 4th 2014, 19:36, by Michael Rougeau
This should come as no shocker, but it's looking like Samsung will release at least three versions of the Galaxy S5 in 2014; the standard flagship and two variants called the Galaxy S5 Active and Galaxy S5 Zoom. The Galaxy S4 also had Zoom and Active flavors, the second being a more rugged version and the first focusing more on camera specs. Now one report claims to have confirmation from an unnamed source that the Galaxy S5 Active is in the works. The evidence for the Galaxy S5 Zoom is admittedly thinner, but Samsung has proven its commitment to releasing anything it can think of and seeing what sticks, so why fight it? Active timeThe report of the Galaxy S5 Active comes from Korean site ET News, which said it has sources who confirmed the device. Like its predecessor, the Galaxy S5 Active will supposedly be water- and dust-resistant. Further, Samsung is reportedly counting on Galaxy S5 Active units making up 20% to 30% of all Galaxy S5 sales globally. According to the same report, the Galaxy S4 Active made up only 4% of Galaxy S4 sales, so that would be a huge jump. Zoom zoomThe Galaxy S5 Zoom sighting is even more tenuous than the claims of an unnamed source. The Indian site Zauba, which in the past has leaked devices like the still-unconfirmed Samsung "Huron" Windows Phone 8.1 handset, has a new listing for an SM-C115 "Samsung mobile camera (for R&R purpose)." The import note says these devices arrived on January 31 and lists them at about 32,600 Indian rupees, or about $520/£320/AU$584 each. According to BGR, which put these clues together, that's enough to out the existence of the Galaxy S5 Zoom - just in case you had doubts that Samsung would try the same strategy again this year. Now what about the Galaxy S5 Mini? What, are we getting ahead of ourselves? - TechRadar has everything you need to know about the Samsung Galaxy S5 - including all the latest news and rumors, plus our wishes for the next Samsung flagship.
      | iPhone 6 camera to snap up 10MP-plus sensor, interchangable lenses? Feb 4th 2014, 19:32, by JR Bookwalter
No one outside of Cupertino is really sure what Apple's next smartphone might offer, but supply chain leaks can occasionally offer a glimpse at what's in store - or send rumor seekers completely off the beaten path. Apple may be looking to wow iPhone owners again this year by further improving upon the camera optics introduced with last year's iPhone 5S. Already widely hailed as one of the most-used smartphone cameras, this year's iPhone 6 could make the leap to 10 megapixels "or more," capable of packing even more image quality into those mobile images. Of course, Apple executives have frequently reminded us that megapixel count alone isn't everything, so next-generation iPhone buyers may have something other than more MPs to look forward to as well. ARTON or bustAccording to an unverified report on Chinese website IT168, the new iPhone could also benefit from a wider f/1.8 aperture capable of throwing even more light onto its image sensor than last year's model. More intriguing, the same report cites unnamed sources from within Apple's Taiwanese supply chain who claim a Japanese company called JSR will be providing "interchangeable resin lenses" for the very same camera lens. Such lenses would reportedly be made from a new, transparent resin known as ARTON, which JSR says offers superior "optical characteristics" and "dimension stability" that are "best suited for optical applications." Lending credence to the last bit of this rumor is the fact that Apple was recently granted two patents for interchangeable camera lenses for the iPhone, although it's too early to know if they'll actually make their way onto this year's model. We suggest you take the above with a few grains of salt, but we should know all when the new iPhone is unveiled later this year. - Check out our full review of Apple's latest iPad mini 2 with Retina Display!
      | The red Nexus 5 is real and available now from the Google Play Store Feb 4th 2014, 19:21, by Chris Smith
The popular Google Nexus 5 is now available in a dashing shade of 'Bright Red' from the Google Play Store on both sides of the Atlantic. Following an avalanche of leaks and speculation in recent weeks, Google has placed the newly-hued handset in its Google Play Store alongside the existing black and white versions. That lick of rouge hasn't altered the price either, with Google keeping the 16GB version at its respectable $349/£299 price point and the 32GB iteration at the equally reasonable asking price of $399/£339. At the time of writing the red Nexus 5 is available for shipping in 1-2 days, but that timeframe is unlikely to remain in play for long, given the history of Nexus stock shortages. In the red zone?Naturally the red Nexus 5, which packs a 5-inch 1080p display and a 2.26GHz Qualcomm 800 Snapdragon quad-core processor will arrive with the latest version of Android 4.4 KitKat as standard. Manufactured by LG and released in October 2013, the Nexus 5 earned a highly commendable 4.5 stars out of five for its great value, fab display and speedy performance in TechRadar's review. Will the new, attractive red coating encourage you to finally pull the trigger on a Nexus 5 purchase? | Opinion: Why is Samsung trying to hide the Galaxy S5? Feb 4th 2014, 14:59, by John McCann
So it looks like the Samsung Galaxy S5 may make an appearance at MWC 2014 after all - but why? Samsung, do you have something to hide? If Samsung was looking to get the maximum publicity for its marketing buck it would stick to the standalone launch event which served it so well for the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S4. These events managed to generate almost Apple levels of hysteria and excitement - a buzz many manufacturers can only dream of, and one which should be carefully preserved, not thrown into a melee of announcements at MWC.
I'm not saying people will ignore the Galaxy S5 if it does arrive in Barcelona, everyone (myself included) will still cover it with the same vigor as previous Galaxy S launches as it's going to be one of the big phones of the year, no matter what turns up - but I'll be doing it in the middle of covering announcements from a multitude of other manufacturers. All part of the planSamsung is going to lose out on coverage compared to previous years - there's no two ways about it. But perhaps that's exactly what it's trying to do. Maybe Samsung has finally run out of ideas on how to reinvent the wheel on an annual basis and is fearing a backlash as it unveils a handset which boasts only minor improvements over the Galaxy S4. People were not overly excited by the Galaxy S4, which brought a slightly updated design and new eye, face and hand tracking tech - branded a gimmick by some. Taking a look at the Galaxy S5 rumors there doesn't seem to be a great deal to get properly excited about. FutTv : sRLqGWI58AluzA higher resolution display is hardly going to blow us away, a 16MP camera still pales in comparison to the 20.7MP Xperia Z1 and 41MP Lumia 1020 and Samsung will be late to the fingerprint scanning tech with the iPhone 5S and HTC One Max beating it to the punch. With less of a focus put on the Galaxy S5, there will be less analysis of its flaws as media outlets attempt to churn through all the new products at MWC - leading to coverage of the sentient points, which realistically, is all the consumer needs anyway. While this earlier-than-expected launch would see Samsung get its handset out the door before HTC - the Taiwanese firm may have the upper hand with its own event in March, allowing the HTC One Two to garner a lot more interest, especially if it can get the phone on shop shelves within a fortnight of announcement. FutTv : 8n1zzi3B0O8D1And what about the design? Is Samsung finally admitting it might not be that desirable? It's still thought that the South Korean brand will stick with the tried and tested plastic chassis for the Galaxy S5, but consumers now have a taste for the finer things in life. The metal clad HTC One and One Mini join the iPhone 5S and Xperia Z1 in terms of premium look and feel - something that Samsung's handsets have always lacked, and it's falling further behind. And the winner is...This is great news for MWC. After a drab CES 2014 the relevance of trade shows was called into question, so having the Galaxy S5 showing up in Barcelona would be a massive coup for MWC - which may boast two major phone launches with the Sony Xperia Z2 also tipped for an appearance. We've also got some decent tier two phones in the shape of the Nokia X Android phone and the LG G2 Pro - they might not be big hitters, but will certainly garner some decent coverage. That potentially spells more trouble for Samsung as the Galaxy S5 will be going head to head with one of its biggest rivals almost immediately. Get the Galaxy S5 wrong and it could be over before it's even hit stores, if critical acclaim is showered on Sony with Samsung's offering failing to impress - OK, that's a bit of a stretch as marketing also plays a huge part, but it's not a fight anyone should want to pick. Sure, the Galaxy S5 will be powerful and brimming with the latest tech - but I fear it will also be underwhelming, and Samsung knows it. | Sony Xperia Z2 set to slip into a size zero bezel Feb 4th 2014, 10:53, by John McCann
The Sony Xperia Z2 is being tipped for a MWC 2014 unveiling at the end of February, and it may be sporting a super slim design if the latest photo leak is to be believed. In a typically blurry spy shot which appeared on Chinese forum Digi-woo, a handset which appears to be a Sony device - judging by the app icons and colour scheme - seems to show an incredibly slim bezel down the side of its display. It's not clear how the forum poster managed to get hold of these snaps, and their poor quality throws the whole thing into doubt - but it's certainly not outside the realms of possibility that this is the Xperia Z2.
Salt shakerAs you may have already guessed, we're recommending a heavy dosage of salt with this particular leak - but the good news is we're hopefully just a few weeks away from the official Sony Xperia Z2 launch. TechRadar will be reporting live from the Barcelona event, so stayed tuned for all the latest from the Japanese firm. FutTv : Bogb5S0S4kxsI | LG G Pro 2 camera set to get a 4K makeover Feb 4th 2014, 09:45, by John McCann
It's no secret that the LG G Pro 2 will be launched at MWC 2014 in Barcelona, and now the Korean firm has spilled the beans on the handset's camera. Taking to its official social site, LG confirmed that the G Pro 2 would sport "OIS plus" technology on the rear facing 13MP snapper. The enhanced OIS (optical image stabilisation) promises sharper images - even in darker situations - while a continuous shooting mode will see 20 pictures snapped in rapid succession. 4K videoThe post notes that the camera gets a revamped interface, as well as slow motion and Ultra HD (3840 x 2160) video recording. Round the front of the G Pro 2 you'll find a 2.1MP snapper - the same camera which is found in the flagship LG G2. TechRadar will be out in force at MWC 2014 to bring you all the latest from the Korean firm, including a hands on LG G Pro 2 review. | |
