Sony is killing PlayStation Mobile on Android so it can focus on PS Vita

Sony is killing PlayStation Mobile on Android so it can focus on PS Vita

Sony is turning off the life support for PlayStation Mobile for Android, as it chooses to focus on PS Vita and Vita TV instead.

PlayStation-certified devices running Android 4.4.2 and below will still be able to use the service as normal for the time being, but versions above that may be unable to access content and play games, says Sony in a translated post from its Japanese blog.

Once you update to Android L, the whole service will be pretty much useless.

While it's not shutting its doors entirely just yet, Sony also says it won't bestow the "PlayStation Certified" label on any future Android phones.

So right now it looks like the plan is to put all the focus on the Vita as Sony's go-to portable device, for indie games and non-indie games alike.

Apple's App Store soars as it shatters records in July

Apple's App Store soars as it shatters records in July

Apple has announced that it has had a record month for app revenue - as the company's phenomenally successful store continues to provide a huge industry with an outlet for their wares.

Apple estimates that it has provided half a million jobs in Europe just through the success of its app store and the huge development industry that provides the apps, on top of the direct employment through the company itself.

With the next iteration of the iPhone - the iPhone 6 - set to be unveiled on September 9, it's fair to say that the app store that underpins both it and the iPad is in rude health.

Dedication

After speaking to CNBC, CEO Tim Cook tweeted about July bring a record-breaking month for revenue.

And although it takes around a 30% slice from each app purchase, the sheer levels of money being generated are not to be sniffed at.

Apple says that it has paid more than $6.5 billion (around 3.8bn / AU$ 3.9bn) to European developers, a big chunk of the $20 billion (c.£11.8bn / AU$ 21.4bn) paid out globally to date.

  • The iPhone 6 is coming, but what do we know so far?

5-inch Moto G successor leaks with bumped up camera

5-inch Moto G successor leaks with bumped up camera

It's no surprise to hear that Motorola may be planning a successor to the hugely popular (and hugely affordable) Moto G, and a recent benchmark may have shed some light on the upcoming handset.

The details popped up on GFX Bench, and seemingly reveal specs for a Motorola handset known only as "XT1063". How does that compare to the Moto G?

Well the standard 3G version carries the ID XT1032, so it's not exactly an obvious step with the ID in question closer to that of the Moto X (XT1052/3/5/6/8), but a quick look at the specs suggests the XT1063 is more likely to be a descendent of the G.

Apparently we can expect the 4.5-inch 720p display to grow to 5 inches, while under the hood Android 4.4.4 KitKat will run on a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 chip and 1GB of RAM - so no different to the current Moto G.

As well as a boost in screen size another change on the possibly new Moto G2 is its cameras, with the rear snapper jumping from 5MP to 8MP and the front facing option from 1.3MP to 2MP.

X marks the box

The Moto X+1 (or Moto X2, if you prefer) is also being hotly tipped to arrive sooner rather than later, and a box bearing the codename "Motorola XT1096" has been snapped and passed to Android Central.

Motorola X+1 - LEAK

It claims the box houses a new Motorola smartphone destined for the Verizon network in the US, although there's no way of confirming the validity of the snap.

Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 rolling out ... just not to HTC phones

Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 rolling out ... just not to HTC phones

Microsoft has hit pause on delivering Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 to HTC phones, the company confirmed in a statement to TechRadar.

"We have paused delivery of Windows Phone 8.1 Update to customers with the HTC 8X and HTC 8S who are using the Preview for Developers," a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement. "Microsoft and HTC have identified an issue and are actively working to fix it, and will resume delivery of the update once a fix is in place."

The update, which is still in beta and technically only for developers (though you can get it, too), started rolling out August 4. However, it quickly became apparent HTC Windows Phone owners were running into download snags.

What's keeping the handsets from installing the latest update? HTC told us it had no information to share, but WP Central discovered the handsets need a driver update sent down from ... HTC.

Seems Microsoft and HTC are working to deliver the necessary driver update, so let us know when you can install the Windows Phone 8.1 Update on your 8X or 8S. Of course, let us know if you can't, too.

In case you were worried, the Moto X is definitely getting Android L

In case you were worried, the Moto X is definitely getting Android L

It's sometimes unclear where Google+ fits between Facebook and Twitter, but at last we know what it's good for: getting answers from executives at companies that have worked closely with Google.

The Google social network is where Motorola Vice President of Product Management Punit Soni confirmed the Moto X is still scheduled to be upgraded to Android L.

After one user posed the question and another tagged Soni in the responses, the executive jumped in with a simple affirmative answer: "Yup."

When another user complained of the speed at which updates go out, Soni replied, "Sad. We really try to speed things up…" A man of few words, it seems.

Upgrade by upgrade

Android L brings a bevy of improvements to Android, including interface adjustments and speed tweaks.

Of course the Moto X only recently got the Android KitKat update on some carriers (cough, Verizon), so it may still be a while before Android L arrives on the Moto X.

Meanwhile it seems likely that Motorola will launch its next flagship - what looks to be called the Moto X+1 - with Android L out of the box.

Updated: Save the date: iPhone 6 launch likely for September 9

Updated: Save the date: iPhone 6 launch likely for September 9

The iPhone 6 launch date has been circled for September 9, according to a new report.

The oft-accurate Recode has word Apple plans to host a "big media event" on that Tuesday. September is new iPhone time for Apple, but this year we expect to see two versions of the iPhone 6 - a 4.7- and 5.5-inch variant.

Update: Both the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg have spoken to their sources and backed up September 9 as iPhone 6 launch day. Make that iPhone 6s launch day as both publications say more than one new iPhone will be announced, namely two with 4.7- and 5.5-inch screen sizes.

In addition to stretching to larger screen sizes (and coming in two premium flavors for the first time), the new iPhone is expected to ramp up to a A8 processor and perhaps even flash a scratch-resistant sapphire display.

Touch ID is almost certainly making a comeback, and with iOS 8's focus on health and home, the iPhone 6 will likely have plenty of features not seen in the iPhone 5S.

There's always more

Of course, it wouldn't be an Apple event if some iPhones were all we got.

While the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 are probably October arrivals, there's a high chance we'll finally (finally!) see the iWatch come September 9. It's about damn time, to be honest.

With rumors of a new 12-inch Retina display MacBook Pro, 4K iMac, 27-inch iMac and a new Apple TV set-top (though that has reportedly hit some snags), September 9 should be filled to the brim with fruity goodness.

If it's not, well then we have October to look forward to.

  • Will the iPhone 6 make the Galaxy S5 look like a chump?
