In Depth: Boosting productivity and managing data overload with the GALAXY Note 3 and Gear

Texts, emails, tweets, calls, memos - managing all of our data on a daily basis can be overwhelming. The more connected we are the more information we have to process, but how do you keep it all under control? How do you make sure you're always at your most productive?

The Samsung GALAXY Note 3 and GALAXY Gear are about enhancing productivity and managing your daily schedule. But it helps to have a few hints along to the way to make sure you're getting the best out of both.

Air Command: your new favourite shortcut

Master and Air Commander

When you've got some serious multitasking to do, you need a decent amount of space to do it in. The Samsung GALAXY Note 3's 5.7-inch Full HD Super AMOLED screen is expansive, rich and gives you the utmost clarity when zipping around with the S Pen.

A killer feature to take advantage of this and help you save time is Air Command, and Action Memo, found within, is a gift from the gods.

When writing something down in Action Memo, you can immediately add that information into another application right there and then. Just select Link to action at the top and then draw around the name or number, for example, and then select the app you'd like to add it to from the list of icons below such as Contacts or Messaging. That's an easy win.

Set phasers to swipe

Instant access

Notifications are great but they can quickly build up into a big confusing mess. Who were you meant to call back? Was it your mum or your boss? That could be awkward.

Handily, the Samsung GALAXY Note 3 helps you keep on top of all your alerts at all times.

For example, did you know you can get a quick look at your notifications without even having to touch the Samsung GALAXY Note 3? Simply turn on Quick Glance in the Air Gesture settings.

Once this is done, you'll be able to swipe your hand over your GALAXY Note 3 when it's asleep and see any missed notifications.

How did we ever manage before Pen Window?

Make the most of Pen Window

Pen Window is an absolute gift for multitaskers, letting you create a number of windows and fill each with an application of your choice.

Maybe you're suddenly faced with a stats-heavy email and need to check the numbers add up. By creating a Pen Window you can easily open a floating calculator to do some quick crunching, meaning no need to exit the Email app at all.

WhatsApp addict? The WhatApp application handily works in Pen Window too, meaning you can keep the conversation open and flowing while carrying on with other tasks.

Photo master in 3,2,1…

Image magic

Using screenshots to get an image is handy but we've often longed for a more intelligent solution. This is where Easy Clip steps in and makes the image editing process far more intuitive.

Simply hold down the S Pen button and draw around whatever it is you want to cut out. You can then alter the shape of the object if you like before saving it to your Scrapbook, sharing it with friends via email or social media, or even adding it to Dropbox. It's a heck of a lot faster than playing with screenshots, that's for sure.

Multi Window

Share the load

Multi Window is one of the Samsung GALAXY Note 3's headline features, letting you take advantage of all that screen space by splitting it between two applications. First, make sure Multi Window is turned on in Settings.

From there, a number of apps can be opened aside one another. Handy for referencing, or even if you want to copy something over from one app to another.

Even better - if you find yourself often using the same two apps together, you can scroll down the Multi Window bar, press the upwards arrow and then hit Create.

You can then name and save that pairing, which will from then on appear as an option in the Multi Window bar.

GALAXY Gear

Go hands free with Gear

The Samsung GALAXY Note 3 and Samsung GALAXY Gear get along pretty well. In fact, life gets a lot easier when they get together.

Tethered wirelessly to your GALAXY Note 3, the GALAXY Gear offers hands free calling meaning you have the conversation through your Gear while carrying out other tasks on your GALAXY Note 3. If that doesn't make you more productive, we don't know what will.

Air View

View from above

Another great time-saving feature is Air View, letting you see a detailed preview of messages and pictures without having to actually open them.

Simply turn on Air View in settings and you can choose to use Air View with either the S Pen, your finger, or both.

Then just hover a finger or an S Pen over a message in your inbox to read the contents, or over an image in your gallery to see an enlarged preview.

Galaxy Gear

Wristy business

Of course, the Gear is also there to keep you updated with notifications, meaning you won't have to keep reaching into your pocket to lift out your Note 3 - all the action is sent straight to your wrist.

One great Gear feature for boosting your productivity is to use it for recording voice memos without having to touch your Samsung GALAXY Note 3.

Once you're done recording, the memo will be sent to your Note 3 for you to open whenever you need it. Easy.

Dropbox

Dropbox

Do you often find yourself wasting time moving various files from device to device? With the Dropbox app, which comes included as a GALAXY Plus app, you can always make your files are in one convenient place.

Say you've just received a picture attachment you've saved to your gallery. Just tap the share icon on the top, then the Dropbox icon, choose where you want to save it and you're done.

Extra handy if you're going to be accessing your files from a different device later. Now life feels a bit more organised.

S Pen

The pen is mightier than the hand

The S Pen truly helps to turn the Samsung GALAXY Note 3 into a productivity powerhouse. Whether it's navigating around the Note 3, writing texts or emails, the S Pen makes things faster and much more precise.

But you needn't stop your flow when you've only got one hand to spare. By going into Controls in Settings you can select One-handed operation, then tick the "Use for all screens" box. Once that's done you can shrink the display into a smaller, movable window.

There's no denying that the Samsung GALAXY Note 3 can make you more productive, and when paired with the Samsung GALAXY Gear life gets even easier.

With these handy hints you should now have expert precision over your Note 3 and Gear, ensuring you're efficient, time savvy, and always in control.

BlackBerry takeover plan abandoned as Thorsten Heins steps down

BlackBerry takeover plan abandoned as Thorsten Heins steps down

Things aren't looking any better for BlackBerry right now, with its hopes of finding a buyer being somewhat dashed.

It's been sniffing around for over two months now in the hope of finding someone to snag the company, with investment firm FairFax Financial proposing a takeover deal.

But today BlackBerry announced that the full takeover will not take place, and that instead it had received a $1 Billion investment from Fairfax and "Other Institutional Investors".

Added to this is the news that Chief executive officer Thorsten Heins will be stepping down as Chief Executive Officer and John S Chen will become Interim CEO.

Dark times

Heins took the top spot last year but he's certainly had a rough ride, with the recent BlackBerry lineup not taking off as hoped.

Today is also bad news for anyone hoping that Lenovo or another big name would step in and offer a hand of rescue to the company.

But John S Chen has a good track record, having turned around the fortunes of enterprise services firm Sybase. Let's hope he can work some magic here too.

There's no word on whether Alicia Key's role as creative director will remain.

Find out if BlackBerry 10 wins our vote.

Translucent bars in Android KitKat could spell trouble for many

Translucent bars in Android KitKat could spell trouble for many

Google's Android 4.4 KitKat update doesn't bring a completely re-imagined operating system to the fore - instead if brings various tweaks and upgrades, one of which is the transparent notification and menu bars.

It's hardly a scintillating new feature, but it allows your wallpaper to take full advantage of all of your smartphone's screen real estate, and to be fair it does look quite nice.

Before you fall in love with the effect too much, be warned: it's rather power hungry. According to the folks over at XDA the new translucent feature is killing last year's Nexus 10 tablet.

Digging around in the Android 4.4.1 code, one user, JosephRaphael, claims to have found a line which allows the transparent bars to be disabled on the tablet.

Poor performance

He also revealed developer comments in the code which state "Translucent status & navigation bars perform poorly on this device."

The Nexus 10 isn't exactly poorly equipped with a 1.7GHz dual-core processor and 2GB of RAM and if it's struggling at this spec level it could mean trouble for a vast number of smartphones.

While quad-core processors are now the norm in high end handsets, many mid and low end devices still pack dual, and in some cases even single, core chips - which could spell disaster for KitKat's fancy translucent feature.

Of course, if the ability to disable this particular effect solves the performance issue then there's little to worry about - but it does make you wonder what other enhancements hidden within Android 4.4 could see lesser powered devices grind to a halt. Fingers crossed Google's got it all covered.

In Depth: Tech fashion insider: Samsung owns the street and catwalk

This guest-blog was written by one of the UK's leading men's fashion writers, Marcus Jaye, editor of thechicgeek.co.uk

Over the past few years there has been a rush for innovation and novelty in the smartphone industry, and in developments in wearable tech, but that is being replaced by a point of difference.

Samsung realises that its consumers demand quality as well as usability. And it is this "fashionable functionality" that sets apart the new GALAXY Note 3 and wearable GALAXY Gear both on the street and on the catwalk.

After all, the smartphone is something that many of us use every waking minute of the day – at work, at home and having fun when out and about on the weekend or on holiday.

Perhaps most importantly, today's discerning smartphone user needs something they can feel is truly theirs. First and foremost, this means being given the choice to 'customise', whether that means choosing its colour or finish.

GALAXY Note 3 fashion

Masculine, Feminine and Neutral colours

Samsung offers the GALAXY Note 3 with a cool leather-look back in three different colours: Jet Black, Classic White and Blush Pink.

Masculine black, neutral white and feminine pink, with a look and feel that makes the device tactile as well as premium.

The prominently styled stitched-look and quality feel of the hardware appeals to a consumer used to the detail of designer goods. After all, this is the age of the designer smartphone: a smartphone that needs to visually integrate with our other luxury goods.

GALAXY Note 3 fashion

"The last accessory you put on before leaving the house…"

The stunning 5.7-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display on the GALAXY Note 3 is ideal for fashion fans and designers.

The Note 3 is notably slimmer and lighter than other models, so perfect for carrying in your jacket without it ruining the line. And the long-lasting 3,200mAh Li-ion battery is particularly suited to our increased use of thirsty applications.

"Your phone is not just a piece of practical kit; it's now the last accessory you put on before you leave the house; constantly on show or in your hand," says Seb Law, Online Editor of Notion Magazine.

"That's why the market in custom/designer/luxe cases for tech is booming; particularly in menswear where there's a trend for men to carry their accessories rather than stash them away.

"See, for example, the decks of colourful clutch bags, notebooks, and tablet cases that always turn up on streetstyle blogs."

GALAXY Note 3

That awesome quick-shoot camera on the wrist

There's an entire generation now using their smartphones to tell the time rather than a traditional wristwatch, so it seems little more than a logical jump for Samsung to provide a watch which syncs with your GALAXY Note 3, providing a summary and instant updates from your contacts.

Hence the modish GALAXY Gear watch, which comes in six stylish colours – Jet Black, Mocha Gray, Wild Orange, Oatmeal Beige, Rose Gold, Lime Green – as well as allowing the user to change the clock face to different styles of analogue-look or digital options.

GALAXY Note 3 fashion

The brushed stainless steel and rubber strap means that the GALAXY Gear is a slick, sleek, minimalist-styled watch, as well as packing in many more useful and handy features inside.

In the digital age, everything is about speed. Being able to react quickly with a device is a massive plus. The quick-shoot camera on the GALAXY Gear means you won't miss a thing: it's right there and waiting.

Whether it's shooting street-style images for The Chic Geek or simply grabbing a visual record, the discreet camera allows you to snap away. It could also be good for scenarios when it's not really appropriate to get your phone or camera out and start taking pictures.

Plus, that handy Pedometer and MyFitnessPal application would be interesting to use to see just how many miles of walking I do during fashion weeks!

GALAXY Note 3 fashion

"We all have the time on our phones, so a watch is essentially jewellery, telling people about you and your status. Smartwatches now say that you are tech savvy and dialled in; purists might disagree, but a smartwatch tells people that you're moving with the times and that you know what's going on in the world of tech," says Seb Law.

"It's something I would wear if it lives up to the proposed seamless level of interaction between watch and phone," adds Nick Bainser, social media planner and menswear writer.

GALAXY Note 3 fashion

The S Pen

As soon as you take the S Pen out of the phone, click the button and hover over the Note 3's screen, the new Air Command options instantly appear with no need for going into different and time-consuming windows. Which makes it genuinely as quick as a traditional notebook and pen.

The S Pen doesn't even need to touch the screen, just hover over the various Air Command options – Action Memo, Scrapbooker, Screen Write, S Finder and Pen Window – and you're away!

Action Memo is a great feature that allows you to make notes quickly and then store them as information in your GALAXY Note 3 using "Link memos to action". This is perfect for fashion press days or those "Eureka!" moments while out and about.

Also, Scrapbooker enables you to collate information from the web, be it images or video, along with the original source information, all in one place. This is great when putting together the new season's trends or making note of something interesting and influential.

"I love some of the new Note 3 functions, especially the new S Pen features – I try and try to use my phone's calendar as my diary but I find it too slow compared to writing it down – the S Pen removes this barrier by being able to recognise my chicken scratch scrawl!" says Neil Thornton, Online Content Editor at Arcadia.

"As a fashion blogger and content editor, I need to be able to make notes for meetings and events quickly and effectively, and what better way to do it? I can't wait to try out the new S Finder. The Note 3 is a beautiful bit of kit too, clean and modern without being invasive."

Screen Write gives you the ability to make notes on images, which would be good for show photos as well as keeping records of the various designers and seasons, while Pen Window allows you to stop what you're doing, draw a new window and open something else, all without stopping: the ultimate in multitasking.

Create and design with Infinite Painter

Infinite Painter Free is a cracking S Pen-optimised painting app that lets you create artworks using hundreds of brushes and effects.

This is highly useful for presentations or adding a bit of interest to collages or mood-boards. The S Pen makes a virtual paintbrush over pictures you've taken or images from the web.

"Using the Note 3 to be able to quickly sketch images and notes would be invaluable for note-taking on the go or for sketching on top of inspirational images and so on," says Nick Bainser.

"Collating scrapbooks and inspirational imagery is crucial for designers and more are using new media to pull this together. Digital notebooks are becoming increasingly popular, and once they can multitask in a fast and reliable way they will become a seamless part of the designers' tool kit."

"There are some quirky and cool functions on the GALAXY Gear, such as Find My Device, meaning you have to work pretty hard to lose your phone," adds Arcadia's Neil Thornton.

"There's also a cool Voice Memo for quick note taking, again very handy in my line of work. The Gear is undoubtedly a slick looking device. It would make a great accessory for any look, with its fresh and modern appeal complementing both edgier and classic fashion styles."

GALAXY Note 3 fashion

Designer peripherals and accessorising the GALAXY Note 3

The potential for the GALAXY Note 3 and Gear watch is limitless within the fashion sphere. Collaborations will see the watch become a must-have accessory. Designers will be able to put their own brand DNA on the watchstraps or the back of the smartphone.

As an example, Samsung has recently teamed up with Italian fashion brand, Moschino, who have given their usual witty take on the phone accessory by making their signature peace sign in black/gold and white/silver combinations along with heart-shaped accessories in white/red and white/gold.

People live their lives through their smartphones and they want them to reflect their personality and taste.

"They've come on a bit from those ugly ones that you could turn your neighbour's TV off with in the '90s, and they can look actually quite chic and stylish!" says style blogger, The Very Simon G.

"From a fashion point of view, they are still in their infancy, but I could imagine a series of limited-edition collaborations with designers or longer term partnerships with fashion houses would really give wearable tech a fashionable shot in the arm."

HTC One Two will be the first Sense 6 handset, apparently
Nov 4th 2013, 11:00, by Hugh Langley

HTC One Two will be the first Sense 6 handset, apparently

The HTC One successor, whatever it might be called, will be the first handset running HTC Sense 6, the next phase of the UI that will run on top of Android.

The info comes from our old faithful bean-spiller evleaks, who wrote on Twitter with his typical brevity: "HTC M8 will be the first Sense 6.0 handset."

As revelations go, this isn't high up on the mind-blow-ometer, but the fact we're hearing talk about the HTC M8 right now suggests the phone is well on its way - set for a MWC 2014 reveal perhaps? All eyes on February, then.

Word of the next HTC flagship began swirling back in July, while the most recent version of Sense is 5, which lets users finally turn off BlinkFeed.

Guess you could say it… makes Sense to us

As a name, HTC M8 will be just a codename in the same way the M7 was for the One. A lot of people are referring to the phone as the HTC One Two at the moment although that one also seems unnecessarily complicated.

Perhaps HTC will go simply with the HTC Two, or give it an entirely new, non-number-based name. Place your bets now.

As for what Sense 6 might actually look, that one remains a total mystery, but there's every chance we could be in line for a total overhaul.

Samsung's first Tizen phone shown off in hands on video

Samsung's first Tizen phone shown off in hands on video

The rumours of a Samsung Tizen smartphone have been flying around for some time, but things have just taken a step up in the form of a video showing the new operating system in action.

The open source Linux-based OS has popped up running on the Samsung Z9005 RedWood, a phone similar to the Galaxy S3 in specs, which has teased itself before.

But now we're treated to a 9 minute video from Sammobile which walks us through a live test of Tizen version 2.2, showing off the various menu layouts and the Camera interface.

Eye of the Tizen

Although it's an alternative to Android, Tizen doesn't appear to be a whole lot different to the TouchWiz UI right now.

Plus, some of the Galaxy features such as "Smart stay", which dims the brightness when you're not looking at your phone, appear on the Tizen OS too.

Samsung hopes Tizen will one day be powering everything from phones to TVs to cars. While the Z9005 seems to be just a developer handset right now, this could be a sign that Tizen isn't far away from consumer hands.

Vodafone to rebound into the arms of AT&T following Verizon divorce?

Vodafone to rebound into the arms of AT&T following Verizon divorce?

European mobile network Vodafone, is the subject of takeover interest from across US carrier AT&T, Bloomberg is reporting this weekend.

AT&T is reportedly taking a close look at Europe's largest carrier and is even weighing up which parts of the business it would keep and which it will jettison, according to those familiar with the talks.

Should AT&T follow through and take charge of Vodafone, the result would be the world's largest mobile network, if judged on sales, with over 500 million customers.

Should the Vodafone consideration come to nothing, the American carrier is also considering a bid for British network Everything Everywhere as an alternative, the report claims.

mobile bed hopping

The news comes just a couple of months after Vodafone accepted a $130 billion package from Verizon Wireless to buy out their partnership.

AT&T would need to wait for that deal to be completed early next year before making its move. So far, AT&T and Vodafone have declined to comment.

Verizon Wireless, it can be assumed, wouldn't be overly pleased if former partner Vodafone jumped straight into bed with its biggest rival in the US.

Apple's head of iOS engineering, Henri Lamiraux leaves company after 23 years

Apple's Vice President of iOS Engineering, Henri Lamiraux has left the company after 23 years, it emerged this weekend.

After changing his employment status to 'Retired' on Facebook and LinkedIn, Lamiruax confirmed to 9to5Mac that he had indeed left the company he first joined back in 1990.

He told the site he'd been away from Apple for two weeks and had decided a "little while ago" that iOS 7 would be his last major release

Lamiraux, who'd been officially woking on iOS since 2005, was in charge of developing the applications which come with the software, according to reports.

Critical

"The executive also led feature-implementation across the operating system, and he managed both bug-fixing processes and feature distribution to consumers. He also managed the frameworks within the operating system that power features and allow developers to build applications." 9to5Mac wrote.

The VP's role had become more important in the last year, following the appointment of Craig Federighi as head of iOS and OS X, effectively making him the 'head of iOS'
